Job Description:
The Communications Manager leads the Pembroke Center strategic outreach program to build relationships with national and international partners to enhance the research programs of the Pembroke Center and increase donor support. By steering and executing the centerâ™s strategic communications and institutional engagement efforts, the Manager ensures that center programs, priorities, and goals are communicated effectively through print and digital publications, website, stewardship materials, email communications, social media and other channels. This position collaborates closely with the Center Director and Associate Director on matters related to communications and program planning to expand the constituency of the centerâ™s research programs including research centers external to Brown and leading archives for scholarly research; senior university administrators; faculty; staff; alumni leadership volunteers; and the general public. The Manager communicates the research and teaching mission of the Pembroke Center.
The Communications Manager integrates strategic concept development, writing, editing, and graphic design to produce publications, invitations, programs, posters, and other visual materials that inform and engage the Pembroke Centerâ™s internal and external communities. The Communications Manager develops design concepts, identify content, write feature stories and produce print and digital publications and promotional materials for Pembroke Center programs and events including those related to scholarly research, and the Gender and Sexuality Studies academic program, the Friends of the Pembroke Center, the Pembroke Center Archives and the journal differences.
Center communications reach an international audience of faculty, students, and researchers from peer institutions as well as senior administrators, researchers, faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students, alumni, and other members of the Brown community, including print, web, and social media.
Education and Experience
â— Bachelor's degree and 5-7 years of website content management, social media production, and email marketing, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
â— Preference for Bachelorâ™s or advanced degree in a field related to the mission of the Pembroke Center.
â— Preference for work experience within an academic environment or cultural organization.
â— Knowledge and command of evolving social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
â— Ability to prioritize complex and at times competing goals.
â— Ability to understand academic content, primarily in the humanities and social sciences.
â— Initiative and judgment to independently problem solve and make decisions.
â— Strong collaborative skills.
â— Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Drupal, Adobe Creative suites or equivalent, Campaign Monitor and other communications software, and demonstrated interest in learning software as technologies evolve.
â— Ability to exercise restraint and discretion in matters that are confidential or otherwise sensitive.
â— Ability to interact with a wide variety of constituencies at Brown, including corporation members, the President, Advancement, senior administrators, and faculty.
â— Accomplished and strategic communicator with excellent writing, presentation and planning skills.
â— Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
â— High level of computer literacy and information management skills.
â— Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
â— Ability to translate and summarize Center initiatives and events for a broad audience.
â— Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with other communicators.
â— Demonstrated commitment to supporting a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
