The National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) has an immediate opening for the Anti-Racism Collaborative Program Manager.
As a part of the U-M provost’s anti-racism hiring initiative, the NCID was charged with developing and hosting an infrastructure and set of coordinated activities for U-M community engagement around research and action focused on anti-racism and racial justice. As such, NCID is home to a new collaborative which advances the fight against racism and injustice, both at the U-M and in society, and accelerates the dismantling of systemic bias and injustice that exists in the United States and around the world. This is done through the integration of world-class scholarship, social action, and practice in society.
The collaborative hosts a variety of activities such as grants, working groups on focused topics, and seminars to stimulate interdisciplinary connection and collaboration around innovative research and scholarship, public engagement, and practice/pedagogical approaches. These efforts involve partnerships with a variety of U-M campus units in order to leverage, share, and apply the broad and deep scholarly and practice expertise on the U-M campus around racism, racial inequality, and racial justice in novel, synergistic, and impactful ways.
The program manager will take a lead role in managing activities and staff connected to the collaborative based at NCID.
This is a 3-year term-limited position with the possibility of renewal
Anti-Racism Collaborative Program Development, Management, and Operations
- Manage the development and implementation of a set of coordinated and innovative activities for U-M community engagement around research and action focused on anti-racism (i.e., grant programs, working groups, seminars, etc.)
- Manage communications and administrative functions in partnership with NCID staff and student interns
- Supervise work of full-time associated staff and graduate students
- Facilitate and organize meetings of faculty, staff and students associated with the collaborative
- Track all documentation related to faculty collaborators, grants and programmatic initiatives
Strategic Planning and Partnerships
- Serve as primary liaison to, and collaborator with U-M schools/colleges:
- Identify, develop, and maintain relationships with relevant faculty and administrative leaders
- Work closely with colleagues across campus to identify and build on opportunities for new audiences, partnerships, and collaborators
- Develop written materials such as framing papers, and associated marketing and communication materials, that effectively communicate the goals and outcomes of programmatic initiatives
- In partnership with NCID staff, connect existing resources to support the development of new strategic and innovative activities around clusters of U-M diversity scholars across departments, disciplines, and across rank (from early career to senior scholars)
- Develop and track metrics for success, and implement action plans for improvement
- Access and apply current research and scholarship to guide the development of impactful, transformative experiences for multiple audiences
- Participate as needed in special department projects
- Lead special projects and teams, as assigned
- Participate in NCID community activities and events
- Bachelor’s degree in education, policy, social work, sociology, psychology, anthropology, ethnic studies, critical studies, or related field
- Three to five years’ experience working within an academic community, particularly with faculty
- Passion for the vision and goals of NCID and its local and national leadership agenda
- Strong background and a sophisticated understanding of issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and society, with a particular focus on anti-racism and racial justice
- Experience framing and executing programming geared toward engaging scholarly communities, and drawing on relevant literatures to support programmatic efforts, particularly literatures focused on anti-racism and racial justice
- Understanding and appreciation of interdisciplinary and intergenerational learning and development opportunities around scholarship and scholarship-based social action
- Understanding of effective approaches for translating scholarship for public engagement and impact
- Demonstrated project management and administrative skills. Ability to set priorities, work simultaneously on numerous tasks with multiple staff, strong attention to detail, and meet competing deadlines. Ability to self-advocate and articulate resources needed for individual and team success
- Experience communicating and building strong working relationships with diverse groups of scholars at all career stages
- Proven experience effectively collaborating with, and working on teams with a very diverse group of colleagues, faculty, staff, and students
- Experience supervising staff and graduate students
- Intermediate to expert proficiency in MS Office applications, Google collaboration tools, and database management. Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new computer software and technologies. Demonstrated experience with social media platforms
- Master’s degree in relevant field
- Five to seven years’ experience working professionally in a college or university setting
- Experience with program evaluation and assessment
The salary range for this position is $64,000 to $80,000, please note that a higher salary may be offered based on equity and the selected candidate’s experience.
Start date is September 1, 2022
