The Pediatric Nephrology Clinical Research program is a collaborative, collegial and fast-paced program that enjoys the opportunity to partner with many intramural and extramural researchers. The Research Program includes longitudinal cohorts, clinical trials, health services, and translational research with funding from a variety of sponsors including NIH, industry, and others. The patient-centered research program focuses on acute and chronic kidney diseases with an emphasis on nephrotic syndrome.
The Clinical Research Coordinator is responsible for coordinating his/her assigned studies and serving as a key team member. The research team includes physicians, biostatisticians, program/project managers, study coordinators, data managers, and administrative support. Research trainees are added to the team on occasion.
The Clinical Research Coordinator supports clinical research within the Division of Pediatric Nephrology and is expected to understand and support the conduct of research within all federal, state and local regulatory requirements. Candidate will perform independent work under the guidance of the program director and supervisor, while also collaborating as necessary to support overall program success. This coordinator is expected to participate in patient recruitment, consenting, and follow up activities in addition to underlying study coordination tasks.
Routine duties include
- Under the direction of study PI to ensure clinical research related procedures are completed in accordance with good clinical practice guidelines.
- Screen, recruit, consent, and retain participants according to research protocols
- Coordinate pediatric/caregiver and adult patient follow up visits with research and clinical teams
- Act as the primary point of contact for research participants
- Serve as liaison between the clinical and research teams
- Prepare and maintain Institutional Review Board applications, consent documents, and recruitment materials for standard and/or ceding applications
- Data collection, data entry, and query management
- Collect, process, label and store biospecimens including blood, urine, and kidney biopsy tissue
- Assist research administrative work such as data use agreements, material transfer agreements, and proposal submissions
- Work with administrative staff to ensure appropriate billing for study related care
- Assist the research team in generation of presentations, abstracts, and manuscripts
- Travel ~1-3 times per year may be required to participant in necessary meetings
- Any other duties deemed necessary to maintain the smooth operation of the research program
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience in healthcare setting
- 3+ years of clinical research experience for intermediate level; 2+ years of clinical research experience for associate level. Experience should include patient-facing activities
- Experience communicating with diverse patient populations
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully while meeting competing deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and exercise good judgment
- Excellent attendance and strong work ethic in past settings
- Knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft applications
- SOCRA/ACRP certification or willingness to obtain
- Proficiency with eResearch
Supervision: Functional supervision is received from Research Program Manager and Director of the Pediatric Nephrology Research Program. Administrative supervision is received from the Division Administrator. Staff members in this classification are expected to work independently and regularly exercise judgment in setting priorities, resolving operational problems and the application of policies, procedures and methods, while maintaining the strictest of confidentiality at all times. A very strong work ethic is required with appreciation for the importance of complete and accurate research data and specimen handling.
Population Served: The clinical research program within Pediatric Nephrology is focused on the advancement of biomedical knowledge of the causes and treatment of kidney disease in children and adults.
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
