Position Summary:
The School of Social Sciences at UC Irvine seeks a positive, highly motivated, self-starter to oversee the Prison Pandemic: Digitizing Incarcerated People's Experiences During COVID-19 project, working under Professor Turney in the Sociology Department. The Sociology Department at the University of California, Irvine is nationally recognized for its broad strengths, including quantitative and qualitative research in such areas as immigration, social movements, social networks, the family, and globalization. As Project Manager, the incumbent will oversee Prison Pandemic: Digitizing Incarcerated People's Experiences During COVID-19, a two-year grant funded by the Council on Information and Library Resources (CLIR) and administered through the School of Social Sciences at UC Irvine. This grant brings together expertise across the School of Social Sciences, the School of Social Ecology, and the UCI Libraries Special Collections & Archives (SCA). Prison Pandemic aims to provide one of the first discoverable and ethical sources of knowledge about how those incarcerated have experienced the COVID-19 crisis. The project team partnered with California community organizations to collect contributions from people incarcerated in California's carceral facilities, with stories spanning across time (with retrospective accounts from the beginning of the pandemic) and place (across all of California's 35 state and 10 federal prisons, jails in most of the state's 58 counties, and all the state's nine immigration detention facilities).

BA/BS with 1-3 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of both education and experience.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Skills to learn organization-specific and other computer application programs. Basic communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality. Skill to use sensitivity, diplomacy, and confidentiality in all relevant matters. Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns. Basic skills to analyze and research information and learn to synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail. Basic program and project management skills. Acquiring knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques. Experience creating project proposals, managing cross-organizational project teams, and working with spreadsheets and integrated library systems. Experience in creating and supervising workflows and project implementation. Ability to communicate professionally, effectively, and diplomatically both orally and in writing with various levels of staff, faculty, students, and with the public and private sectors. Excellent organizational and time management skills to prioritize workload and meet deadlines (with attention to detail) when faced with multiple projects and frequent interruptions in limited time and resources. Ability to independently re-prioritize assignments as needed, to accomplish goals and meet deadlines. Knowledge of data ethics, digital sovereignty, and other fields concerning archives and collections pertaining to BIPOC communities. Familiarity with the following programs: Audacity, Google Drive, Dropbox, WordPress, Slack and Trello, Dublin Core. Familiarity with budget management System-impacted individual or individual interested in the study of the criminal legal system.
Special Conditions Required:
This is a 100% career position with guaranteed funding for two years. Continued appointment is contingent upon receipt of grant funding. Some travel may be necessary in California and out of state. As driving will be required for this position, candidate must possess a valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain one as required by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Participation in the DMV Employee Pull Notice Program is required.
