The Industrial Hygienist administers a comprehensive program to identify, monitor, evaluate, communicate and control occupational hazards at Fred Hutch. The incumbent reports to the Facility & Safety Manager and works independently in directing industrial hygiene projects and activities according to established policies, procedures, and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Design and oversee industrial hygiene projects. Manage consultants and vendors who provide industrial hygiene and related services.
- Develop industrial hygiene policies and procedures in accordance with appropriate rules and regulations.
- Assist in developing and presenting laboratory safety training, and monitor for effectiveness.
- Perform sampling and laboratory analyses to identify, quantify, and mitigate employee exposures to occupational hazards.
- Consult with employees regarding recognized and potential occupational exposures and investigate occupational accidents and illnesses as necessary.
- Develop and maintain the carcinogen controlled use program including reviewing and approving Memorandum of Understanding and Agreement for chemical carcinogens used in research at Fred Hutch.
- Provide industrial hygiene up-dates and reports to the Fred Hutch Health and Safety Committees as necessary.
- Monitor industrial hygiene expenditures for cost control and budget conformity and assist manager in budget development and justification.
- Perform Center industrial hygiene surveys.
- Maintain all industrial hygiene program records.
- Maintain all industrial hygiene monitoring equipment.
- Maintain current knowledge of new and existing laboratory safety regulations relating to industrial hygiene and ensure compliance.
- Serve as a member of the Fred Hutch Haz-Mat Spill Response team.
- Assist in selection of appropriate PPE based on Job Hazard Analysis.
- Perform Job Hazard Analysis.
- Assist in development of various safety related trainings to be presented to Facilities Engineering department.
- Provide respirator fit testing in accordance with Respiratory Protection Program.
- Perform other responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in industrial hygiene, public health, chemistry, or closely related scientific field.
- Three years of professional experience as an Industrial Hygienist, preferably in a research setting.
