The Program Director is a leader, self-directed strategic partner, health care provider, consultant, educator and coordinator of care for employees. Developing Brandeis’ first occupational health clinic and serving as a primary provider at the university for the ongoing patient care management, this person will apply the nursing process, assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation in providing care for health problems.
The position is a full-time benefits eligible position.

Primary job duties
Employee Health Management
- Builds and grows an occupational health clinic that will serve as a key resource for faculty and staff.
- Applies principles of case management to achieve the best outcomes for in an efficient manner; acts as a confidential liaison
- Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats work-related injuries and illnesses. Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate lab and diagnostic tests to assess employee health care needs. Evaluates outcome of employee care, makes vital revision of care plans and arranges for follow-up. Collaborates with physicians and other health care professionals to handle employee care.
- Develops and leads medical surveillance programs for pre-employment and periodic health maintenance to handle health risks – including MMR, PPD, Hepatitis B virus, tetanus, and other immunizations and screenings. Performs pre-placement physical exams, as required, for various employee groups
- Provides guidance regarding work restriction and/or job modification when vital and communicates any changes to both the employee and the manager. Provides case management services in collaboration with the worker’s compensation insurance carrier and provides communication with the employee and manager.
- Performs physical examinations as deemed appropriate. Responsible for ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests as needed.
- Performs fitness-for-duty evaluations, including those for drug and alcohol use on the job or premises.
- In partnership with the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and other relevant offices, develops and implements health prevention and education programs on topics such as ergonomics, stress management, and blood bourn pathogen exposure.
- Provides triage for -emergency injuries. Participates in developing, refining, and responding to the incident reporting process for workplace injuries and potential issues. Performs routine office procedures that are medically vital (basic first aid, sprains, etc.).
- Provides health education with regard to injury and illness, disease processes, treatment plans, promotion of self-care, and prevention.
- Responsible for maintaining the clinic’s security and confidentiality of protected health and personal information and maintaining appropriate records and databases to ensure organizational compliance with mandated reporting requirements.
- Implements, evaluates, and updates clinic guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols. Leads ongoing quality assessment and improvement of clinical programs.
- Practices in accordance with written guidelines in compliance with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Maintains prescriptive privileges as defined by the MADPH. Uses prescriptive authority responsibly for all medications and, if DEA licensed, for Schedule II through V controlled substances in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Actively guides employees through matters involving workers’ compensation, family medical leave (in conjunction with HR), and accommodation of disabilities.
- Collaborates and partners with members of the Brandeis Health Center for the purpose of case review, risk assessment, and program development, and maintains close working relationships with Human Resources, EH&S, and Emergency Management who are all key resources for the clinic’s success.
COVID-19 Protocols
Primary point of contact for all faculty and staff returning to campus post-COVID, with the Broad Institute, and for identifying environmental and administrative controls for infectious control and related workplace safety.
Provides COVID counseling to faculty and staff on physical, medical and mental health issues, guiding them toward community resources and/or employee assistance programs as appropriate.
Develops and provides supporting guidance and policy recommendations for optimizing post-COVID reopening planning and protocols.
Supports case contact tracing and reporting, working closely with the Testing team, Human Resources, Health Center and with local and state Department of Health resources as needed.
Partnerships and Collaboration
Support EH&S, as needed, on audits of workplace hazards, equipment, and management protocols. Supports the Emergency Management director, as needed, with implementing emergency and disaster preparedness programs, and collaborates and partners with the Student Health Center, COVID Testing Team, Human Resources and Campus Operations.
Qualifications & Desired Traits
Education: Masters professional (NP) with either occupational health certification or health and safety certification training.
Experience: 7 plus years of experience, preferably in higher education

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Satisfactory completion of a formal education program from an NLN or ANA accredited program for Nurse Practitioners.
Current certification from a nationally recognized accrediting body approved by the MA Board of Registration in Nursing for Nurse Practitioners: American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Experience in building and coordinating an occupational health clinic. Consistent track record to build and cultivate relationships with partners and stakeholders. Encouraged to lead diverse teams consisting of non-direct reports, requiring high degree of collaboration and inspiring confidence with team members. Project management experience.
Strong orientation toward resourcefulness and self-directed management matched by focus on team performance and knowing when and how to escalate issues.
