The Career Counselor provides career advising and job search support to undergraduate students at a liberal arts college. The Career Counselor must be able to work in a fast-paced office that is student-centered and job recruiting and career events driven. This is a full-time, exempt position.

This position requires a solid understanding of career advising and the functions of a college career office. The Career advisor delivers one-on-one advising to students and must be able to assist students in translating a liberal arts education into the world of work. Knowledge of careers in Communications and Media; International Affairs, Human Rights NGOs and Foreign Service; Environmental Studies, Urban Planning and Architecture related jobs are a plus in working with students interested in careers in these job markets.
Meeting one on one with students, assisting with our annual recruiting consortiums, and giving workshops on relevant career topics are an integral part of the job. The Career advisor will play a large role in developing and overseeing on-campus partnerships with faculty and other key areas on campus to enhance and provide strategic programming. Additionally, the Career advisor will work closely with the entire CDO staff to help facilitate the many recruiting events, interviews, and panel discussions that focus on job and internship opportunities. 60% of the job involves individual career advising and all post-graduate career preparation, and 40% focuses on programming and development, including developing campus-wide partnerships across departments and student clubs, creating workshops and speaker series, as well as contributing to our current programs. Knowledge of and experience in administering personality assessments and interest inventories is a plus in working with students to sort out career options.
Key Responsibilities:
- All recruiting consortiums
- Experience working with college-age students in an advising capacity
- Develop connections with diverse groups of students across campus
- Plan and deliver career panels, career information events and site visits including managing details of these events
- Design and deliver curricular materials to orient and engage students, faculty and internship partners through digital and traditional means.
- Develop seamless systems to engage and position students for success in their internships and experiential learning opportunities
- Collaborate to develop/utilize assessment tools to analyze and monitor student career development progress
- Recommends various enhancements to improve student experiences; as well as analyzes job market trends to determine solutions in response to market conditions
- Interface with campus organizations and staff to coordinate career programming
- Research and connect to prospective employers of interest
- Support End of Year reporting and collection of data
- Create effective workshops on relevant career topics
- Build relationships with campus partners and faculty
- Meet one-on-one with students
- Collaboratively hire, supervise and train our student peer career advisors
- Perform occasional weekend and evening work
- Other job duties as assigned
- B.A. required and a master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Social Work or related field is preferred
- Must exhibit excellent communication skills to a diverse group of internal and external audiences. Demonstrated success working with and for diverse students, faculty, staff, and alumni/ae
- Strong time management, organization skills, program management skills required
- Knowledge of assessment tools required
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to represent the office and present at public events and deliver effective workshops; can successfully create career-related handouts, social media posts and CDO correspondence
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work under tight deadlines, collaborate with others, and work under pressure
- Able to deliver creative programming with minimal staff
- Strong knowledge of CSMs required experience with Handshake preferred
