The Creative Arts Instructor is part of the Sarratt Art Studios/Arts and Campus Events in the Dean of Students division at Vanderbilt University. This is a part time, hourly position responsible for teaching art studio technique classes in a community art education setting. Based on scheduling and program needs, the Creative Arts Instructor may teach 3 to 21 hours per week.
Sarratt Art Studios opened its doors in the mid 1970s to offer non-credit art classes to the Vanderbilt and Nashville Community. Adults, 18 and over, are eligible to enroll in a variety of art classes for 10 weeks each semester including summer. Many of the classes are designed for beginners to explore creativity and techniques in a fun, safe, friendly environment with opportunities for students to also participate in advanced level classes and workshops. Sarratt Art Studios has a full clay studio, dedicated darkroom facilities for black and white film, a mixed media studio for a variety of classes including jewelry and fused glass, plus we make use of conference rooms within the building for additional classes such as digital photography.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and implement course content, course materials and methods of instruction to meet students' needs and aspirations. Evaluate, and revise curricula, materials, etc as needed with the Assistant Director.
- Explain and demonstrate artistic techniques, skills and correct use of materials, equipment and general studio cleanup
- Observe and informally evaluate student work to determine student progress and make suggestions for improvement
- Ensure classrooms are stocked with adequate supplies and assist with cleanliness and organization of supplies. Notify the Assistant Director for any items that need restocking or attention.
- Keep attendance for class and communicate with students as needed or requested by the Assistant director.
- Assist in providing a clean, safe and positive environment for all students
Supervisory Relationships:
This position does not have supervisory responsibility; this position reports administratively and functionally to the Assistant Director, Arts and Campus Events
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Art or Art Education is preferred.
- 2+ years of experience teaching creative arts, with the ability to perform and teach lessons in a class setting is necessary.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with a diverse group of students and staff is necessary.
- Being actively engaged in exhibitions, craft events/fairs, publishing or other areas of pursuit within your field is necessary.
- Experience in establishing creative environments in which art is explored, discovered, and observed both in and out of the classroom is necessary.
