We are excited to welcome a Communications Specialist to the team responsible for our widely respected, global platform for effective communication of the translated science of child development. The Communications Specialist will play a key role in both initiating and supporting communications and marketing activities in service of the Center's vision and strategies. This position will manage the creation and dissemination of multimedia, multi-platform content that will help the Center meet its strategic goals.
This role will begin as a generalist engaged in copy editing and content development in multiple forms, with an opportunity to focus and specialize over time given interest and organizational need. In addition, the Communications Specialist will serve as the communications team's content liaison with various Center initiatives, providing communications-related thinking and assistance in support of their goals (e.g., content development, marketing support, etc.), and bringing content ideas back to support the Center's overall communications strategy.
The Communications Specialist will develop, maintain, and execute project work plans, including identifying, securing, and managing outside expertise and resources, as needed. The position will work as part of a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision using strong judgment and discretion, in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
Collaborating with colleagues on the communications team and across the organization to identify and develop new content to meet the Center's goals using video, audio, still imagery, and text, and managing the process for assigned content
Managing the Center's social media publishing in support of the overall communications strategy using Sprout Social; tracking data and making recommendations for changes in approach
Producing and disseminating tailored materials of repackaged science content in multiple formats for various target audiences, including proposing ideas, writing or editing content, designing/creating layouts, and/or developing graphics and visuals, as needed
Maintaining editorial quality, design, and production standards, as well as values, messaging, and style consistent with the Center, for all Center communications, including print, web, email, video, audio, and webinar formats
Collaborating with Center staff members, affiliated researchers, and others to understand their communications needs and proposing content and/or marketing solutions for meeting those needs
Conducting research on target audiences and developing and implementing strategic work plans tailored to reaching and engaging with these groups
Creating and updating content on the Center's website using a content management system (WordPress)
Supporting the Center's ability to measure impact and progress against goals for both donor reports and strategy development; tracking and analyzing metrics; collecting and drafting stories of impact; distilling lessons learned from what's being done to inform future iteration.
This is a term position for one year from date of hire with possibility of renewal

Minimum 4 years of related experience.
Experience managing social media
Must have experience using Adobe InDesign, image editing tools (e.g., Photoshop, Canva), email marketing tools (e.g., MailChimp or similar), social media management tools (e.g., Sprout Social, HootSuite), and web content management systems (e.g., WordPress).

Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or related discipline.
Proven command of editorial, grammatical, and writing skills in a variety of short and long forms.
A demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
Experience in journalism and/or a background in science, education, health, public policy, or social services is a plus.
Experience with development of multimedia products, including video and/or podcast planning and production.
Experience developing communications strategy, preferably in an academic or non-profit environment.
Basic knowledge of HTML is a plus.
Experience bringing a racial equity lens to communications is desirable.
Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to deal effectively and diplomatically with senior-level managers and executives in academic, governmental, and/or private sector institutions and organizations.
Keen attention to detail; critical-thinking skills; flexibility; organizational skills; and desire to learn and grow.
