JOB SUMMARY:  The Middle School vocal music teacher provides classroom instruction to Middle School students in grades six, seven and eight. This position requires close collaboration with other members of the arts faculty—both performing and visual, in addition to collaboration with fellow Middle School faculty. The role is also responsible for encouraging students to participate in school-wide and community music opportunities, and generally serving as an enthusiastic leader for the vocal music program. The vocal music teacher should possess a willingness to teach students at all levels using student-led rehearsals and other inquiry-based approaches to teaching and learning as opposed to focusing solely on performances, competitions or festivals.  The successful vocal music teacher will have experience working with students and families from diverse backgrounds, empathy for the experience of non-dominant culture students, and a creative approach to incorporating these values and experience into the vocal music curriculum. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Design, manage, develop, and facilitate a dynamic, engaging, and effective curriculum.
• Manage the classroom environment so that all students can learn safely and effectively.
• Establish and maintain appropriate standards for student behavior using Restorative Practice methods which encourage reflection and problem solving and support positive self-esteem and building relationships.
• Serve as a role model for Middle School students.
• Write and submit evaluation reports for students in a timely manner.
• Collaborate effectively with faculty and other colleagues.
• Communicate with students and parents in an effective, timely, and professional manner.
• Facilitate communication with advisee parents, including running advisee conferences.
• Act as a grade level advisor for advisees and advisee parents.
• Attend Middle School meetings and Team meetings.
• Engage fully in OES based DEI development activities
• Supervise certain duties during the school day, lead evening and school day performances, and attend two overnight Middle School trips.
• Liaison / Other Duties
• The role requires the Instructor to work with the following:
  • Chaplaincy (groups perform in Chapel often)
  • St. John the Baptist music director and chaplain (joint events, concerts)
  • Instrumental music teachers on campus
  • LS general music teachers on campus and after-school lessons teachers
  • Maintenance (set up requests for concerts and events)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• BA/BS or equivalent in relevant discipline
• Five years of successful teaching experience in a K-12 setting and two years choral conducting experience
•  Intercultural competence, ability to interact appropriately with students, coworkers, family members of all backgrounds and identities; ability to teach diverse groups of students effectively, commitment to equity, and inclusion
• IT skills: general digital literacy, intermediate to advanced MS Office Suite, database skills, web applications including Google Docs, Zoom or Skype, etc. as appropriate to job duties
• Ability to pass a background check and drug screen
•  Documentation of Covid-19 vaccination or religious/medical exemption

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Advanced degree in relevant discipline
• Three or more years of managing and teaching vocal ensembles, preferably with Middle School students
• Experience organizing and managing public music performances, including student support and logistics
• Instrumental music experience and/or ability
• Experience with Kodaly
• Extensive knowledge of vocal music and literature of pedagogy
• Skill in coaching students through adolescent voice development
• Demonstrated ability to play piano for rehearsal purposes

• Strong Interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team setting using team-based and collaborative approaches; ability to maintain collegial relations with colleagues

• Organizational skills, ability to effectively manage multiple tasks as well as the flexibility to meet job requirements beyond the school day
• Flexibility, ability to employ a balanced approach to assisting students and their parents and establishing and maintaining a positive rapport with students and families
• Knowledge of educational technology; openness to innovation, willingness to learn as digital tools evolve, ability to integrate evolving IT into curriculum

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Primarily classroom environment, ability to sit at computer and keyboard for moderate periods
• Ability to stand aided or unaided to conduct vocal ensembles
• Ability to lift up to 20 pounds on an occasional basis
• Mobility sufficient to move about the campus and to navigate off-campus locations on school trips
• Ability to see, hear, and speak to interact with students, parents, and groups of individuals
