The Microbiome Therapies Initiative (MITI) at Stanford ChEM-H is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist for a role in our ambitious new effort to harness the power of the skin microbiota to benefit human health. By leveraging state-of-the-art microbiology and immunology techniques, you will help advance DARPA funded work by designing and implementing complex experimental approaches to bring skin microbiome-based vector repellant interventions from the bench to clinical trials on a preset timeline. In addition to this intervention you will be working with MITI scientists to develop new culture conditions to isolate fastidious skin microorganisms,systematically design and test cultivation strategies to grow skin bacterial communities in a cGMP suite to create material for clinical trials, and design and implement experimental approaches to characterize the immune response to interventions. This position offers many exciting opportunities to be at the cutting edge of microbiome based therapeutics while you learn and grow with our team. In addition to working alongside talented MITI scientists, you will work with multiple faculty laboratories from the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Humanities and Sciences facilitated by Stanford ChEM-H. Candidates should have bacterial culturing experience, strong organizational skills, and be a good team player. Ideal candidates are self-starters, comfortable with autonomy, yet embrace opportunities to tackle new problems and challenges as part of a dynamic team in a start-up-like environment within the University.
Design and execute research approaches on a preset timeline to develop a microbiome based intervention to decrease attraction to mosquitos as a part of a DARPA cooperative agreement.
Build and develop protocols to evaluate skin microbiome based therapeutics efficacy in vivo, including designing flow cytometry panels to interrogate immune responses to therapeutics.
Leverage molecular biology techniques in skin bacteria to generate strains of interest.
Maintain a detailed record of experiments and outcomes.
Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for cGMP manufacturing of skin microbiome based therapeutics.
Analyze and interpret research data resulting from original procedures, methods, and sequencing based assays.
Lead or participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on all phases of the research project.
Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; propose new strategies and protocol based on new advances discussed in literature.
This position may formally supervise, and train new staff or students as needed, including hiring, performance management, and related duties, in addition to instruction on culturing skin microorganisms, therapeutic design, and cGMP approaches to manufacturing skin microbiome based therapeutics.
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and four years of relevant work experience; or Master's degree in a related scientific field and two years relevant experience; or PhD in related science field is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Proficient in aseptic bacterial culturing techniques.
Technical proficiency with immunological techniques including flow cytometry
Experience working with mice
Experience running and analyzing GC/MS samples
Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.

Strong background in molecular biology including PCR and cloning in skin bacteria.
