OverviewThe communications specialist will play a lead role in the design and implementation of the Andlinger Center communications strategic plan and will cultivate the voice of the Andlinger Center, aligning with the Center’s strategic goals and engaging a wide range of audiences. The communications specialist will ensure editorial standards, identify story ideas and write content for web, multimedia and video projects, targeted social media strategy, and print media projects; and will exercise discretion and judgment. The communications specialist works with leadership to enhance the brand identity of the Andlinger Center and to strengthening connections with partners and donors. The communications specialist will also convey highly technical information to a scientifically literate audience, in additional to a non-scientific audience, in an effort to bring research to life.
The position reports to the executive director of administration and works closely with the Andlinger Center director and the SEAS communications director in support of the strategic vision. The position also works closely with the visual communications specialist, the SEAS senior editor and the SEAS communications team.
ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities include:
Strategic Planning and Reputational Risk: support the development of the center’s strategic communications plan and maintain branding standards of the written content of all communications assets with the SEAS communications director and Andlinger Center director; and informs leadership on strategic communications decisions and addresses the risk of reputational concerns:
- design and develop communications plan and outreach strategy for promoting and distributing publications and products to multiple audiences; ensure consistent voice and effective message across communications efforts through development of editorial and marketing policies and procedures; play a key role in defining the center’s core audience; enhance media presence that effectively captures the audience;
- support University-level and SEAS communications and advancement initiatives and materials through all communications avenues;
- manage the written content and messaging of all research, teaching, partnership and outreach; and
- develop, document, and maintain editorial and marketing policies and procedures for all content.
Writing, content generation and curation:
- write compelling content of the center’s research, teaching, partnerships and outreach; responsible for understanding highly technical research material and translating into effective prose; function as effective liaison among faculty, researchers, students and corporate leaders to develop compelling content;
- plan and produce written content for all assets including website, presentations, social media, email announcements, newsletters, reports, distillates, brochures, videos, graphics, posters, news releases, and other publications; and pitch research and news stories to media outlets and environmental journalists.
Project Management:
- manage editorial flow and content for all assets, including the Annual Report; manage and produce content for the Princeton E-ffiliates Partnership and its related marketing materials;
- in collaboration with the visual communications specialist, create, collect, and curate content that promotes and enhances featured news and events; and select images and art.
- serve as editor for publications including the Energy Technology Distillates, e-newsletters, brochures;
- maintain up-to-date media contacts, particularly for media with specialized interests related to the center; and
- establish and maintain connections to local and relevant media resources to ensure effective promotion.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
• 4-6 years communications, editorial or relevant experience
• excellent writing skills and demonstrated ability writing on science and/or engineering topics; ability to translate technical material into an accessible written narrative offered to a broad audience.
• excellent communications skills, organization and problem-solving skills, along with a high level of attention to detail; ability to manage project progress and timeline.
• excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills.
• ability to work collaboratively with varied teams; ability to build and maintain strong relationships of trust with a wide array of colleagues.
• high degree of professionalism, poise, positive attitude and strong work ethic.
Preferred Qualifications:
• masters degree in science or engineering field helpful
• experience in writing research feature stories on science and/or engineering topics preferred
• ability to work evenings and weekends as needed, including necessary annual events
