In this exciting role, you will provide multifunctional technical support, applying engineering or scientific concepts and practices in a scientific or engineering field for the purpose of scientific / engineering support, or coordination. You will investigate and support development of new analytical / control methods and techniques, using professional concepts in accordance with Lab objectives to solve complex problems in creative and effective ways. You will assist in research tasks (e.g., literature review and industry stakeholder interviews) and synthesize findings across a diverse range of related topic areas, with decarbonization of commercial buildings and small building controls / monitoring as key focus areas. You will apply strong technical writing skills to documenting research outcomes for a variety of audiences and the development of practical application guidance (e.g., for building operators). You will also be confident in addressing direct technical assistance enquiries from LBNL partners (e.g., building owners, technology vendors, third party service providers). You will also be comfortable analyzing and interpreting large datasets and developing visual outputs to communicate key findings.
What You Will Do:
Provide resolutions to technical problems of moderately complex scope relating to controls/analytics where analysis of situations or data requires a review of identifiable factors. Examples may include:
Primary research, e.g., industry stakeholder phone interviews to understand technology development needs and gaps.
Secondary research, e.g., literature review to document state of the art in building decarbonization and control/monitoring technology topics.
Writing, e.g., Report content, presentation deck development & delivery, contributions to papers and presentations for journals and conferences, development of application guidance on controls and monitoring.
Data analysis, e.g., Analyze and chart data on participants in lab programs such as building characteristics and implemented measures; analyze time-series data on HVAC faults or energy consumption to understand typical characteristics.
Deliver quick response technical assistance to internal and some external users of the group's resources.
Plan, document, and track technical tasks' progress across several projects and update project management tracking tools as needed.
What is Required:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent training and experience in engineering or a related field with 2 years related professional technical experience, or combination of education and technical experience.
Some experience reviewing and/or analyzing operational data for commercial building HVAC systems, particularly for small commercial buildings.
Understanding of standard principles, theories, and/ or concepts surrounding commercial building HVAC system operations, and technologies for building monitoring, diagnostics and control.
Ability to manage detailed information of multiple projects simultaneously; use technical scientific / engineering concepts to synthesize project results into clear and compelling written and visual documents.
Clear and concise writing and editing skills.
Advanced interpersonal skills to work in a matrixed project team environment with peers, supervisors and clients to manage group and interpersonal stakeholder concerns.
Proven ability to work independently given knowledge of broad program goals and objectives.
Strong computer skills, including high proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, G Suite tools.
Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to present information on complex subjects in a form appropriate for clients and non-technical audiences; comfortable with public speaking, high work standards and solid decision-making skills.
Skill in organizing in-person and remote engagement with experts, stakeholders, technology vendors.
Desired Qualifications:
Master's degree in a related field.Hands-on experience in energy analytics and software tools.
Advanced data analysis (e.g., Python coding, statistical analysis), programming skills, and experience with visualization software such as Tableau, Seaborn.
Experience working with state and federal governments.
Authorship of journal articles, conference papers, other publications on energy related topics.
Experience with commercial building operations, commissioning, and auditing.
Experience with building automation and controls for small buildings.
Knowledge of equity-related such as: qualification criteria for commercial buildings to participate in equity focused programs; Examples of equity-focused programs targeting operational efficiency improvements in commercial buildings; active past participation in equity-focused company initiatives.
Certified Energy Manager (CEM).

This is a full time, 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
