Job Summary:
Xavier University of Louisiana, a Catholic and Historically Black University, seeks a creative, innovative, engaged, and enthusiastic librarian for its full-time Head of Learning, Research, and Technology position. This position is for the 2022-23 academic year beginning August 2022 and reports to the Library Director. This librarian will focus heavily on instruction in the University Library's Data Visualization Lab, Innovation Studio, and Virtual Reality Lab. Xavier currently offers degrees in statistics/data science, computer science, bioinformatics, engineering, robotics and mechatronics engineering and other STEM education programs. This position will lead their department in collaborations with Xavier faculty as they incorporate technology into course design, student research projects, and instructional literacy sessions. The position will serve as a local expert on issues dealing with maker equipment, virtual technologies, and augmented technologies, that can expand the traditional learning experience. This librarian will work on campus.
Librarians hold non-tenured, faculty status. They are expected to develop a record of service, scholarship, and professional development. The Xavier University Library supports the ongoing professional development of librarians and seeks to recruit individuals committed to continuous learning and growth.
Job Responsibilities:
Instruction (50%)
Designs, teaches, and assesses information sessions for students interested in using the Innovation Studio equipment (3-D printers, laser cutters, CNC millers, digital tools, sewing machines, and other elements) needed to engage students in learning by doing.
Designs, teaches, and assesses information sessions for the Virtual Reality Lab.
Designs, teaches, and assesses information sessions for the Data Visualization Lab.
Leads part-time remote librarians working with these technology laboratories.
Trains undergraduate and graduate student workers to use these technology laboratories.
Xavier students promote STEM to rising high schoolers and middle schoolers via a variety of learning by doing outreach activities. This position would train undergraduate students to teach their young mentees to create in high tech environments.
Collaborate with the First Year-Experience Librarian to develop research projects for summer interns.
Consultation (35%)
This position will consult with instructors to identify technology that will assist them in meeting their pedagogical goals and design and deliver digital literacy programming.
Consult with vendors to update and repair equipment.
As a Library Liaison, assists in the development of the print and online collection in liaison areas (namely the robotics and mechatronics engineering program, computer science, and physics).
In partnership with faculty, ITC partners, and the systems librarian, explore, identify, and evaluate new and emerging technologies to align services and support with faculty course objectives.
Explore new and emerging technologies with the Xavier community and provide opportunities for them to test, tinker, and learn.
Service and Scholarship (15%)
Serves on Library or University Committees.
Demonstrates a commitment to personal professional development through scholarly research and publication, presentations, and participation in national professional associations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Minimum Qualifications):
Master of Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited program is required.
Experience with 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC millers, sewing machines, and button makers.
Experience with VR headsets, and mixed reality.
Knowledge of relevant academic and instructional design technologies for content creation (e.g., Camtasia, Adobe Captivate, Adobe Creative Suite) when training and instruction are online.
Knowledge of a learning management system (e.g., d2L, Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, Brightspace) should training or instruction need to be online.
Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively to groups and individuals at all levels of the organization.
Commitment to ongoing professional development.
Patience and sensitivity for interactions with young adult students.
