Job Summary
Will work closely with the Senior Communications Consultant to produce news and information for IUPUI faculty, staff and affiliates, primarily in the form of email newsletters.
Department Specific Responsibilities
Collaborates with the Strategic Communications team and school communicators to repurpose that content and advance the top institutional priorities of the university and the IUPUI campus.
Plans, researches and writes news items that clearly and effectively convey important information to IUPUI faculty, staff and affiliates.
Coordinates graphic elements to accompany stories, including photo, video and infographics.
Shepherds pieces through the editing process and formats, publishes and distributes the news using various communications platforms.
The Internal Communications Specialist exercises news judgment. Monitors progress of editorial projects and tracks production schedules.
Monitors analytic pertaining to the e-newsletters as well as the communications vehicles they link to, including websites.
Provides general support for internal communications on the IUPUI campus, including production work for the IUPUI Today and other Today newsletters.
General Responsibilities
Independently creates basic and complex communications for print and e-distribution on behalf of department or functional area within department and in support of departmental goals and objectives; communications may be interdepartmental; staff, faculty, or student-focused; or external.
Responds to inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders and creates communications coverage for relevant initiatives, events, and programs.
Prepares communications timelines and shares progress of communications toward relevant deadlines with manager, team members, and other relevant constituents.
Regularly monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty.
Utilizes various communications software programs and delivers communications in multiple formats to a variety of audiences.
Provides guidance to lower-level Communications Generalists.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
2 years in relevant field
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered
SKILLS
Preferred
Strong writing, editing, communication and digital production skills.
Motivation to seek out and learn new technology and communications platforms.
Ability to coordinate with photo/video, media relations and social media teams.
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and content management systems (e.g. Agility, SalesForce, Cascade).
Experience in the role of reporter, digital production, copy editor, communications assistant or another job where digital communications production, writing and editing are the primary responsibilities.
Experience with HTML code or similar.
Understanding of Google analytics or similar.
Fluency with video and photo editing software.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
