University Marketing is seeking a full-time, front-end web developer to build innovative, well-engineered websites and to help inform the online strategy for the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
University Marketing creates websites that serve the entire UW-Madison campus. The university's gateway site (www.wisc.edu), the official UW Wordpress theme, and the campus news site and alumni magazine are a few of the web properties in our portfolio. More recently we've launched several showcase sites including exploreuw.wisc.edu, origins.wisc.edu, and chazen.wisc.edu. Our ideal candidate will embrace working with digital and user experience designers to create more sites and storytelling experiences like these.
We follow modern best practices in front-end web development, starting with semantically meaningful markup, progressive enhancement, and responsive design. We work primarily with open source platforms and tools -- WordPress, Laravel, Rails, and static site generators such as Eleventy -- in an environment where we have the flexibility and opportunity to innovate and create. We are constantly learning while we work as part of a team to design, build, and deploy custom solutions. In fact the nature of our work requires this passion for learning.
The web developer position requires organization, flexibility and a sense of humor. You will collaborate with designers, user experience experts, and developers. This position reports to the Web Director and requires a team player with an ability to function effectively in the highly complex and decentralized environment of UW-Madison.
Responsibilities:
Leads and participates in the design, development, layout, coding, maintenance, and support of websites and applications to meet the needs of functional users. Designs, develops, and deploys custom interactive web applications and integrates logically designed databases.
10% Evaluates and implements open source and commercial products to meet project needs
60% Designs, develops, and deploys web applications and integrate databases based on relevant website coding scripts
10% Serves as a subject matter expert, consultant, and main point of contact for internal and external stakeholders regarding website and application options, design, maintenance, and support
10% Investigates, resolves, and recommends solutions to website problems and performance issues such as speed of access
5% Contributes to website strategy and recommends changes to leadership
5% Monitors website use and trends, status of projects, and reviews work for completion/quality

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications: - Two years of experience developing websites within a development team in a professional context. - Experience translating highly creative marketing, editorial and user-interface designs into standards-compliant and accessible HTML and CSS. - Experience developing themes, templates and design components for CMS platforms (e.g. WordPress) and/or static-site generators. - Experience writing "vanilla" Javascript and/or using Javascript libraries or frameworks to implement web behaviors such as animation and basic DOM manipulation. - Experience developing and testing websites with accessibility in mind, including a basic familiarity with WCAG and other accessibility standards. - Experience with git or other modern version control systems. - Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze communications problems from the perspective of how the web and other digital technologies (e.g. email) may be used to help solve them. - Ability to work independently and produce high-quality websites for customers in a timely manner. - Adaptability and flexibility in evolving situations. - Demonstrated desire to learn new things.
Preferred Qualifications - Intermediate or better knowledge of PHP coding best practices, particularly in the context of developing custom WordPress themes and plugins. - Experience developing web application user interfaces and database/API integrations using Javascript frameworks such as Vue, React or native Web components. - Experience with server-side application development using a framework like Laravel or Rails. - Experience using automated testing tools (e.g. Axe) and/or assistive technology (e.g. screen readers) to evaluate and improve a website's accessibility. - Experience using CI/CD tools for automation, quality assurance and code deployment. - Basic understanding of Linux and the command line, especially as it relates to managing local development environments. - Knowledge of and passion for higher education or nonprofit organizations.
