The mission of the Study Abroad Center is to foster a culture at UCI in which study abroad is expected and achievable for all students. The Center reports to the Global Engagement Office, and assists students in participating in programs abroad that offer unique academic opportunities, international learning and personal development while making progress toward their UCI degree. Graduates who have studied abroad become future leaders - in public, private and non-profit sectors - with a more nuanced understanding of other countries and cultures as well as greater self-awareness and self-confidence. We aim to ensure that our students' study abroad experiences help them affect positive change in the world, both locally and globally. Under the direction of the Director of Study Abroad Center, independently counsel and support students through all phases of their international experience, from program exploration to reentry programming for a full range of study abroad program opportunities through UCI exchange programs, the University of California's Education Abroad Programs (UCEAP), other UC Programs, non-UCI programs, work, internship, volunteering and research programs abroad. Assists in the development and maintenance of a study abroad academic integration strategy and advocate for academic integration into existing UCI curriculum. The Study Abroad Advisor is expected to have general knowledge of campus academic departments, schools and colleges, major and degree requirements, and study abroad programs to assist students in identifying potential programs that match their interests, academic/linguistic/cultural preparation and goals. Applies in-depth knowledge of academic and course offerings of international programs in his/her portfolio. In collaboration with academic specialists on campus, help identify program options abroad for students in advisor's portfolio of UCI academic schools and departments. Position involves close cooperation with staff at the UCEAP Systemwide and Program Providers, and coordination with relevant academic and administrative units at UCI. The incumbent leads the team in scholarship fundraising efforts to enhance financial support for study abroad participants. Using knowledge and skills as a seasoned, experienced Student Services professional, performs the full range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life specialization. Assesses situations and determines appropriate action or referral. Works independently under general supervision to provide information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures and regulations. Identifies and responds to student needs for programs, services, and crisis intervention.
Required:
Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in higher education, advising/mentoring a diverse university student population.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Experience developing and implementing marketing plan.
Substantial experience designing and implementing outreach activities and training.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
Excellent customer service and student relations skills.
Proficiency using Horizon and other software programs (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software, etc.) to accomplish assignments.
Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities, including ability to motivate teammates.
Strong and organizational skills; ability to handle details and prioritize workload.
Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization.
Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Ability to work and interact effectively with people who have different skills, backgrounds and experiences.
Abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills.
Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
Excellent cross-cultural communication skills, both oral and written; and ability to effectively communicate in a variety of situations, including interpersonal and formal large-group settings to multiple audiences.
Preferred:
Master's degree preferred.
Proficiency with social media and digital marketing.
Previous experience living, studying or working abroad.
Foreign Language skills.
Strong knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Experience developing, identifying and securing internal and external funding to support study abroad scholarships.
