Responsibilities:
The Tishman Environment and Design Center is seeking a dynamic, dedicated Communications Manager to support all aspects of the Tishman Center initiatives on campus and in partnership with environmental justice, community based, and climate justice organizations. The Communications Manager will report directly to the Sustainability Engagement Director.
This is a new position for the Center. It is a great opportunity to build out a more robust communications strategy and vision for a fast growing research and practice center. The Communications Manager will develop visionary communication strategies across Center initiatives including campus engagement and events and external research and advocacy projects co-produced with partners in the environmental justice and climate justice movements.
The Tishman Center supports environmental and climate justice action, innovative design, and transnational movement building. We are committed to bringing an interdisciplinary and environmental justice approach to contemporary environmental challenges. We have a strong history of building trusted partnerships with grassroots, frontline, and advocacy groups in the environmental justice and climate justice movement both regionally and across the country. A core competency for the Communications Manager is the ability to foster authentic relationships of trust, humility and mutuality grounded in the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing.
We are looking for a Communications Manager who is interested in storytelling and crafting narratives to help amplify the environmental justice movement and the initiatives of the Center.
The Tishman Center is working to create a culture of ant-racism, decolonization, and liberation within our team and practices. This is a place where you can bring your whole self to the position and be in a community of people working on how to live these principles in our relationships with each other and the communities with which we engage. The Manager will be a part of a hybrid team made up of staff and faculty located in New York City and remotely nationwide and should be comfortable working with a diverse range of working and communication styles. This person should be comfortable and prepared to work in a remote setting. Occasional travel to the New School offices in NYC will be required (1-2x quarterly).

Job Responsibilities
- Identify annual communications goals, metrics and strategies; track and report performance metrics
- Co-develop communications and messaging materials and work plans across Center initiatives in collaboration with Directors and Managing Director
- Create promotional content (text and graphic) for web pages, newsletters, and social media as it relates to public and campus events and other campus engagement activities
- Oversee the development and implementation of communications plans for research and advocacy initiatives working collaboratively with key stakeholders and Directors
- Ensure messaging alignment across Center initiatives and with environmental justice and climate justice principles; work closely with environmental justice partners as key stakeholders in messaging and communications
- Manage and develop social media accounts (Twitter, Youtube, Instagram and others as needed)
- Manage and coordinate with Center staff internally on all communications projects and initiatives
- Maintain and advance Tishman Center website
- Track mentions of Tishman Center and its staff and faculty in traditional and social media
Minimum Qualifications:
- Design and technical skills such as Adobe Creative Cloud and web design tools
- Commitment to the Jemez Principles & environmental justice (EJ) Principles: ability to listen deeply to, provide support to, and follow the lead of frontline, community based leaders and collaborators
- Demonstrated solution-oriented approach and high emotional intelligence
- Proven track record of strong project coordination and communication skills, including attention to detail, ability to effectively prioritize tasks with little supervision, and work independently to accomplish assignments and projects
- Comfortable engaging in an emergent, collaborative work-style with multiple partners, staff, and contributors
- Proven track record of success with social media engagement
- Interest in or experience with crafting narratives that tell complex and compelling stories related to social movements
- Experience contributing to and/or managing complex, long-term projects
- Excellent writing skills; can draft and copy edit final documents
- Creative approaches to link legacy media to digital media
- Basic video and image editing skills
- Commitment to principles of inclusivity, justice, and anti-oppression
- Experience working with frontline communities and multiple sectors, including social justice organizations and philanthropy
- Ability to travel to NYC and potentially other locations on a regular basis
- Ability to adhere to University COVID-19 policy and requirement
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years experience in communications management or a Master's Degree in a related field
- A deep interest in environmental, racial, and social justice
- Advanced understanding of visual media

Currently, this position is 100% remote. Applicants willing to work remotely are able to apply. This is a grant funded position. It would begin immediately and go through December 2025 with an opportunity for an extension contingent upon funding and performance. New York Benefits and tuition waiver eligible.
Salary Range: 75,0000 – 85,000
