The Open Society University Network (OSUN) is a global partnership of educational institutions that integrates learning and the advancement of knowledge across geographic and demographic boundaries, promotes civic engagement on behalf of open societies, and expands access to higher education for underserved communities. The Director of the OSUN Library Resources Program oversees programs, policies, and operations for OSUN library resources and acts as a library services advisor to the network's members. The program provides needed library resources to students in OSUN courses, promotes more equitable access to library resources across the network, and develops open educational resources.

The Director is responsible for the management of library services, collections, and critical partnerships with member libraries, OSUN faculty, and OSUN administration. The Director is an active contributor to the academic life of OSUN members and takes the lead in developing new ways to anticipate and respond to the diverse needs of students, faculty, and staff. They advocate for the thoughtful application of technologies for ever-increasing access to collections and services. They will lead a flexible, responsive team who succeed by taking responsibility and seeking opportunities to collaborate. They will develop a budget infrastructure that anticipates comprehensive annual operating budgets. The Director reports to OSUN's Managing Director at Bard, works closely with the Head of the OSUN Secretariat at the Central European University, and coordinates closely with the library directors of OSUN partner institutions.

The Director will work in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, gender identity, nationality, sexual orientation and religion. The Director will be based at an OSUN member institution in Vienna, Budapest, Blagoevgrad (Bulgaria), Berlin, Vilnius, London, Accra, Dhaka or other location to be determined according to OSUN's needs and the Director's preferences.

Responsibilities

• Directs all aspects of library operations, including program and policy development, collections, finance, personnel, and long-range planning;
• Promotes an energetic library role in support of student learning;
• Works closely with network leadership and faculty, promotes the adoption and use of open access sources and open education resources;
• Establishes relationships and negotiates with vendors, and works with consortia to obtain favorable pricing and terms;
• Works closely with the Technology Strategist, especially in expanding digital initiatives related to collections, collection access, and instruction;
• Works closely with the OSUN Registrar for collection development purposes;
• Supervises one librarian who oversees acquisitions, access, and training
• Represents library practice and policy to a variety of campus constituents, and others in the wider community;
• Maintains and expands important partnerships with staff engaged in instruction and student services;
• Maintains and expands collaboration with member libraries for resource sharing, print archiving, group purchasing, and other initiatives;
• Coordinates staff development, preparing them to be adaptive, imaginative, appropriately skilled, and self-critical;
• Collaborates with key university constituents concerning assessment, metrics, and data use.

Required Qualifications

• MLIS/MLS degree; additional graduate degree in an academic discipline desirable;
• Five years managerial experience in an academic library;
• Evidence of successful budget management;
• Strong leadership and supervisory skills;
• Knowledge of all aspects of academic library systems;
• Understanding of contemporary academic library practice as well as emerging trends and technologies, in particular open access sources and open education resources;
• Strong commitment to liberal education; 
• Excellent verbal, written, and inter-personal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Commitment to civic engagement and equity in a liberal arts environment;
• Demonstrated ability to advocate for library services and collaborate across cultural and geographic boundaries;
• Experience with international library operations and consortia;
• Proficiency in generating and analyzing data.
