First Amendment Watch (FAW) is seeking a Researcher/Writer to contribute to the growth of our website dedicated to covering the many contemporary controversies involving freedom of speech and press. The site, a publication of NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, launched in October of 2017 and presents aggregated content and original legal and historical analysis of First Amendment conflicts. It also produces and offers original teaching materials on free speech for college and university courses. FAW receives foundation funding and NYU support for its operations.

Researcher/Writer is a full-time position with NYU employee benefits. It is grant-funded for at least a year, with the possibility of an extension contingent on satisfactory performance and additional foundation funding. The job is based at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at 20 Cooper Square, New York, N.Y.

Responsibilities of the Position:

• Research contemporary First Amendment issues, utilizing primary and secondary source material such as court opinions and law review articles.
• Research historical documents associated with the freedoms of speech and press from America's founding period forward to the present day.
• Research and write about decisions of state and federal courts pertaining to the First Amendment.
• Project management of the First Amendment Watch website.
• Research and write posts for First Amendment Watch as well as a weekly newsletter on current cases and controversies.
• Presentation of First Amendment Watch research, blog posts, teaching guides, and other materials at public conferences.
• Presentation of First Amendment Watch research and other materials through vigorous social media and other outreach.
• Presentation of First Amendment Watch work in multimedia, including podcasts, videos, and live streaming.
• Collaboration with other organizations that work on First Amendment issues, including work on common documents and events.
• Propose and initiate new editorial projects and partnerships that further the mission of First Amendment Watch.
• Plan events, including panel discussions and conferences.

Familiarity with First Amendment issues is helpful, as are excellent research and writing skills, analytical ability, and an entrepreneurial mind-set.
