Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University (ISU), located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, clinical or tenure track faculty appointment in the area of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) and the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC). The LVMC is a state-of-the-art teaching hospital providing specialized care for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. The candidate will join a department with over 50 diverse faculty and staff members, allied in teaching, research, and clinical efforts relevant to companion animals, equids, and other large animals.
The successful candidate will provide clinical service and teaching in the LVMC and the primary focus for all aspects of the position will be on veterinary emergency and critical care for patients in the Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital. Clinical duties may include weekend and after-hours obligations. Supervision and instruction of interns and residents, instruction of clinical-year students, and primary case supervision is expected, in addition to participation and contribution to weekly resident boards review and journal clubs. The successful candidate should have a collegial, collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in all levels of technician, student, and house officer education. Remaining effort may include participation in research, scholarship, and traditional didactic and laboratory teaching. Appointment rank will be determined by the qualifications, documented experience, and interests of the selected candidate.
The successful candidate will join a program currently supported by two small animal ACVECC diplomates, four residents, three emergency doctors, eight rotating interns, three large animal ACVECC diplomates, as well as registered veterinary technicians; including two VTS-ECC. The emergency and critical care (ECC) department is a young and dynamic service that is continuing to experience steady growth. Centered in the State of Iowa, just 25 minutes from the largest city in the state, Des Moines, the LVMC serves a large geographic region (Iowa and surrounding states), providing a diverse and challenging caseload that allows the ECC service to practice cutting edge medicine. Services and technology supporting the ECC service include but are not limited to digital radiography, point of care ultrasound, advanced imaging (1.5T MRI, 32-Slice CT), interventional radiology, mechanical ventilation (Servo-i), high velocity nasal insufflation (two Vapotherm units), therapeutic plasma exchange (Amicus device), multi-parameter monitoring systems, an in-house blood bank, TEG, and two pharmacists with compounding capability. Continuous renal replacement therapy (Prismaflex) will be available starting in 2022. The successful candidate will share oversight of the ICU and the Emergency Service with the other ECC faculty members. The 43 cage ICU is currently managed in an open style with all services providing primary care, utilizing a collaborative approach to maximize case management. The 24/7 Emergency Service sees approximately 7,000 cases/year, including first opinion cases as well as referrals. The LVMC is AAHA accredited, a VetCOT Level 2 trauma center and a Level II VECCS certified facility.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
- DVM or equivalent degree.
- Successful completion of an American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) residency. Individuals in their final year of residency training are encouraged to apply.
- Evidence of competency in performance of veterinary emergency and critical care clinical services.
- State of Iowa Veterinary License on or before first day of employment.
- Eligible to register under the state Controlled Substances Act with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy upon employment.
In addition, positions at the following ranks will require:
CLINICAL ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: Experience in academia and a record of contributions of an appropriate magnitude and quality in the clinical specialty. There should be evidence of promise for further academic development and contributions to their field.
CLINICAL PROFESSOR: Board certification in their clinical specialty and substantial academic experience and contributions to their professional field.
ASSOCIATE or FULL PROFESSOR: Board certification in their clinical specialty and record of experience and scholarship appropriate to each rank at Iowa State University.
Preferred Qualifications:
- ACVECC diplomate, or ACVECC board-eligible candidate
- Demonstrated ability to instruct veterinary students.
- Experience in modern, veterinary emergency and critical care practices and standards of care.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to train residents for successful completion of the ACVECC certifying exam.
- A record of, or notable potential of, scholarship production through manuscript publication/preparation, preparation/success in granting activity, an advanced academic degree (MS or PhD), or national scholarly, clinical, or educational presentations.

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) is one of five academic departments in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), comprised of over 50 diverse faculty and staff members across a wide range of disciplines, all allied in teaching, research, and clinical efforts relevant to companion animals, equids, and other large animals. VCS faculty members teach over one-third of the professional veterinary curriculum courses in the fully accredited DVM program, and most faculty hold appointments in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC) where they provide outstanding clinical service to patients, animal owners, and referring practitioners. The LVMC is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide specialized care and comprehensive medical and surgical services for companion, exotic, and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states.
