Job Title: Open Rank Professor of Design Theory and Practice
Job Family: Furman Faculty
Full-Time/Part-Time: Full time
Compensation Grade: FAC
Pay Type: Salary
Job Summary: The Department of Art at Furman University seeks a tenure-track Assistant, Associate, or Professor of Design Theory and Practice to begin August 1, 2022. We seek an applicant who has an active exhibition record, a strong commitment to teaching, is capable of contributing to an innovative undergraduate design curriculum, and will contribute to the department's support of Furman's DEI initiatives. The Design Theory curriculum should offer a historical and critical framework through which students can understand the important theories and practices of art, design, and general visual culture, focusing on the global twentieth- and twenty-first century. An ideal candidate would be proficient in design history, theory, and practice as well as the instruction of foundations-level courses. We seek applicants who can think creatively about curricular development and bring new content and new perspectives into our program.
This professor will teach a 3:2 load and assume responsibility for foundation and upper-level design courses (potentially contributing to our graduate program in Strategic Design) with the possibility of developing additional courses within the department and with interdisciplinary partners across campus, including Study Away and MayX. A successful candidate should be able to teach a First Year Writing seminar. Responsibilities also include guiding senior projects and contributing to the maintenance of the design lab. Our liberal arts approach fosters both creativity and entrepreneurial skills, which teach students how to make their work marketable and adopt a flexible and creative mindset. Our curriculum encourages double majors, with our students often partnering with the Business and Accounting, Communication Studies, English, or Psychology departments. We seek a candidate who can critique student work in a wide range of media and deliver studio art content to a broad community across the University's curriculum. All faculty are expected to provide mentorship opportunities and high-impact learning experiences in line with The Furman Advantage.
Furman University is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of university life, and strives to create an anti-racist community through excellence in teaching, mentorship, and programming. Numerous initiatives and programs are underway or planned to promote these ideals, including: historic projects, dialogue initiatives, the Center for Inclusive Communities, and a new major in Africana Studies. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with historically underrepresented students, including students of color, and be committed to assisting the university in its continuing efforts to become a model of inclusive excellence. The Art Department at Furman is committed to increasing the representation of historically marginalized or underrepresented perspectives in academia and especially encourages applicants from these communities.
This professor will assume responsibility for current, core courses in design and develop additional courses in intermedia, potentially with interdisciplinary partners across campus. We encourage applicants to highlight any secondary specialties in animation, time-based work, video, web design, and other digital media. Furman University is a small liberal arts university located in Greenville, South Carolina. The Art Department offers BAs in Studio Art and Art History in a combined art history/studio department and has approximately 60 students majoring in art history and studio art, 6 full-time faculty, and offers classes in drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, graphic design, sculpture, printmaking, and art history. Our department focuses on developing students with technical proficiency in studio art and art history, but also stresses an interdisciplinary approach to viewing and making art that emphasizes critical thinking and writing.
