Dept Marketing Statement The Division of Student Affairs and Success provides campus-wide coordination and leadership for student success programs and activities across departments, divisions, colleges, and administrative units. The Student Affairs and Success Division includes Career Success, the Student Success Centers, Dean of Students, Student Conduct, and Student Health, which all provide direct services and resources to students.
Under the supervision of the Vice Chancellor for the Division of Student Affairs and Success, the Executive Director for the newly developed Office of African, Black, Caribbean Student Success manages a complex set of Student Affairs and Student Life & Development functions to advocate for the holistic success for ABC and underrepresented students on campus. The Executive Director will develop the long term organizational goals and strategic plans of the organization and manage full-time professional staff that support different functional areas in the support of this student population. The Executive Director will be a key strategist and content expert on support of ABC students and how to collaborate with various stakeholders across the entire campus organization.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION Salary Information: $90,000 - $95,000 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES 25% - Student Advocacy and Cross-Campus Collaboration
Meets with students individually and in small groups to assess student needs, strengths/challenges and provide guidance/intervention to problem solve and support student success.
Assesses and diagnoses underlying and root issues/challenges that interfere with student success.
Communicates with Student Affairs and Success departments/staff, College & Department Advisers, and other colleagues on campus to track and resolve student issues.
Engages with faculty and staff to advocate on behalf of students and to seek resolutions to a myriad of issues impacting the retention and graduation pathway of students.
Escalates student cases as appropriate to the Dean of Students Office, Counseling and Psychological Services and supervisor as appropriate.
Serves on campus-wide committees such as Behavior Intervention Team, Hate Bias Response Team, etc.
Convenes the Black Experience Team to advise the Chancellor and Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor (CP/EVC) on ongoing recruitment, retention and campus climate strategies surrounding African-American, Black, and Caribbean (ABC) students.
25% - Program Development and Management
Establishes the mission, vision, and values of the Office for African, Black, and Caribbean (ABC) Student Success and strategic priorities related to improving the student experience and retention for ABC students.
Develops and oversees the planning and implementation of effective retention programs and strategies for ABC students.
Coordinates and leads special retention initiatives targeting ABC students.
Serves on campus committees to inform and provide the perspective of and advocate for ABC students and their experiences.
Collaborates with campus units to increase the visibility and inclusion of ABC students.
Develops and implements budgets for the office of ABC student success.
As assigned, liaisons and collaborates with student services units, academic departments and off-campus partners.
Responsible for maintaining and enhancing systems that support the program(s).
Develops curricular and co-curricular strategies that promote the academic success of ABC students.
25% - Assessment, Analysis, and Advisement
Conducts analysis and policy development for programs' issues and processes.
Assesses retention strategies using systematic review by defined research questions and collecting and summarizing empirical evidence.
Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual reports documenting patterns and trends in student cases and emerging best practices/solutions in serving students.
Disseminates best practices and associated student outcomes to the campus community.
Researches, monitors, and tracks policy issues and practices related to student success, retention, and graduation.
Provides recommendations and suggestions to campus leadership for changes and/or development based on data, analysis, and research patterns.
Participates in the development of annual goals and calendar in office, unit, and divisional spaces.
Serves as a trainer and content expert on issues related to ABC students in higher education.
15% - Supervision
Hires, trains, and supervises professional staff responsible for the retention and support of ABC students including but not limited to the Black Men's Initiative Coordinator and ABC Retention Specialist.
Counsels, monitors, and evaluates employee performance.
Makes decisions on salary actions, hiring decisions, and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
Works closely with team members to manage student cases that require the attention of the supervisors, undertaking initial information gathering, developing recommendations for response, taking the initiative to mobilize appropriate responses and/or services.
10% - Other Duties as Assigned
Participates in professional development activities to continually evolve best practices and stay abreast of innovative and research based practices.
Represents UCSC in system-wide entities related to ABC student success.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience/training.
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of common university-specific computer application programs.
Strong skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
Advanced knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Life specialization.
Experience with equity-minded pedagogical and culturally responsive practices and Curricular Development.
Strong leadership skills to motivate employees and influence attitudes and behaviors.
Strong skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication; multitasking and intercultural competence and uses these skills to develop original ideas to solve problems.
Master's degree preferred.
