Dept Marketing Statement The Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS) provides campus-wide coordination and leadership for student success programs and activities across departments, divisions, colleges, and administrative units. The Student Success and Equity portfolio of departments is a branch of DSAS focused on academic support services, advising/counseling, student life/co-curricular programming, student identity development and retention/student success initiatives. Student Success and Equity provides services to the campus community with over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students and has over 64 career employees and 475 student staff employees operating in 8 facilities/locations. The Student Success and Equity area includes a wide array of multi-disciplinary academic and non-academic units including: Disability Resource Center (DRC), Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP), Learning Support Services, Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS), Renaissance Scholars Program, Veteran Resource Center, African American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC), American Indian Resource Center (AIRC), Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC), Chicano/Latino Resource Center (El Centro), Women's Center (WC), the Lionel Cantu Queer Center (LGBTQ+), Undocumented Student Services (USS), the UCSC Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives (HSI) grant and campus committees/programs, and the Administrative and Business team for the unit.
The Student Success and Equity area includes all of the units and over 125 state, federal, student service fees and gift fund sources and an annual operating budget of nearly $14 million dollars.
The Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) for Student Success and Equity provides senior strategic leadership in the design, development, oversight, assessment and continuous improvement of academic and non-academic student support services to promote engagement, belonging and success. The AVC leads and manages the full operations of a portfolio of academic and non-academic organizations and initiatives across the Student Success and Equity departments and faculty/campus partnerships. The AVC leads and provides administrative oversight for all human resources, financial affairs, facilities/capital projects, and student programs, initiatives and services. In addition, the AVC determines the mission and engages multi-disciplinary departments through subordinate managers in strategic planning, assessment/evaluation and disseminating best practices at national and state conferences. The AVC collaborates with principal officers, deans, assistant deans, college provosts, department chairs and directors of administrative units on academic and non-academic services impacting the student experience at UCSC including the Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives and equity-based interventions designed to improve outcomes for first-generation, low-income and underrepresented students of color.
The AVC participates with other higher-level managers to establish strategic plans and objectives. The AVC makes decisions on operational matters and ensures achievement of objectives for a large operating unit with a direct impact on a major unit in the Division of Student Affairs and Success. The Student Success and Equity unit has a significant multi-organizational or multi-institutional influence. The AVC reviews and approves recommendations for operational planning and control; erroneous decisions can have a serious impact on the overall success of the department, division and/or the organization.

Job Duties 40% - Leadership and Strategic Planning in Academic and Student Service Areas
Oversees and evaluates student success program implementation.
Determines and establishes organizational structures and supervisory relationships.
Advises senior managers on strategic matters related to student success, retention, and equity innovation related to student outcomes and campus wide issues.
Interacts with higher-level management on strategic and climate issues planning and researching issues and student relations to influence and persuade other high level managers on possible solutions and communications.
Participates with and advises other higher-level managers to establish organization strategic plans and objectives for the Division of Student Affairs and Success and the campus on matters of student success, diversity and institutional identity.
Leads multi-divisional, multi-functional teams to implement academic and non-academic programs and initiatives.
Leads and ensures that programs that have a critical impact upon the organization such as Disability Resource Center compliance, are managed and implemented in a manner that comports with policy and the law.
Provides expertise and thought partnership to the campus community on known and emerging issues relevant to the retention of students, including the K-16 pipeline and the retention of underrepresented, low-income, minority, ethnically diverse, LGBTQIA+, community college transfer, and first-generation students.
Serves as a key member of the divisional leadership team and advises the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Success on matters of student success, retention, equity, climate, and belonging.
Leads and engages in divisional projects on behalf of the division as assigned.
30% - Oversight and Management of Departments and Programs/Initiatives
Manages, prepares, administers, and directs organization-wide programs.
Cultivates and models strong management practices among direct reports.
Manages and supervises the directors and teams (a total of 64 direct and indirect reports) of the Disability Resource Center (DRC), Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP), Learning Support Services, Services for Transfer and Re-entry Students (STARS), Renaissance Scholars Program, Veteran Resource Center, African American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC), American Indian Resource Center (AIRC), Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC), Chicano/Latino Resource Center (El Centro), Women's Center (WC), the Lionel Cantu Queer Center (LGBTQ+), Undocumented Student Services (USS), Administrative and Business Team, and the UCSC Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives.
Ensure services are effective in retaining students and meeting the needs of the K-16 pipeline through the development and implementation of systems to assess quality and efficacy, creation of professional development strategies, and utilization of standards and national trends.
30% - Resource Management
Makes decisions on administrative and operational matters and ensures achievement of department objectives.
Allocates resources for retention programs and services in accordance with the mission and goals of the Division of Student Affairs and Success and the academic mission of the University.
Provides leadership and financial oversight to the unit directors and evaluates resource allocation and performance for each unit (micro) and the larger Student Success and Equity budget (macro).
Provides direction to the unit directors and Student Success and Equity Manager for Business and Resources in resource development, budget planning and performance. In times of reduction, provides leadership and guidance on resources based upon principles to preserve high-impact services on retention and degree completion. In times of increased investment, guides unit directors to scale out effective services that impact student success.
Directs and guides campus departments within and outside of the Division of Student Affairs and Success on the successful submission of federal applications including the Title III/V Eligible Institutions Application and other related campus wide applications.
Partner and engage faculty in basic research grants furthering HSI programs and student success related initiatives.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience/training.
Excellent leadership abilities to oversee multiple functions or departments through subordinate managers.
Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; project management; capital project management; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.
Excellent team-building skills and experience in conflict management techniques.
Demonstrated experience setting and achieving student success outcomes and using data-driven approaches to measurably improve unit effectiveness. Deep experience aligning employee goals to unit objectives in ways that measure effectiveness of contributions to promote the efficient operation of the department.
Expertise in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs & services which successfully address academic success, retention, matriculation, and student leadership.
Strong knowledge of specialized platforms for student success, case management, accessibility resources, and retention.
Expertise and excellence in conducting research, quantitative and qualitative analysis, use of effective assessment tools and ability to forecast student needs, and to develop, implement and evaluate programs that address these needs campus-wide.
Advanced knowledge of student success, retention, and student development theories, and the ability to translate this knowledge into practice to create measurable change.
