Reporting directly to the Dean of the School of Social Work, the Associate Dean for Communications Strategy, Development, and Alumni Affairs will be a key member of the Dean???s senior leadership team. The Associate Dean will have a proven track record of success in integrating the domains of communications strategy, development, and alumni affairs, consistent with the University???s vision for the fourth purpose: impact in the world. The Associate Dean will work closely with colleagues in the University???s Office of Alumni and Development, including the Vice President for University Development. The primary responsibilities of this role include: promoting the visibility of the School through strategic communications efforts; expanding connections with key stakeholders; engaging alums and friends who share the School???s vision; identifying new partners and supporters focused on social and racial justice; managing existing and new fundraising initiatives, with a particular focus on scholarship support; and leading impactful cross-disciplinary teams, initiatives, and projects. Supervises staff; manages assigned budget; serves as liaison to the University???s development and alumni efforts.
Communication Strategy: The Associate Dean will be responsible for comprehensive communications strategy and constituent-centered engagement planning to enhance the School???s visibility and reputation, both nationally and globally. Will develop in-depth knowledge of the intellectual life of CSSW in order to promote its educational and research efforts broadly. Will coordinate internal and external communications plans and crisis response efforts. Will collaborate with senior leadership and faculty to maximize awareness of the breadth and impact of the School???s social justice and racial justice initiatives, and reach new audiences. Will work closely with the Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Community Engagement and the Associate Dean for Enrollment Management on messaging and outreach. Will lead internal cross-school, interdisciplinary projects and initiatives. Will develop institution-wide strategies to enhance awareness of Social Work and build cross-sectoral collaborations with external partners. Will provide writing assistance for the Dean???s Office. Will cultivate relationships as appropriate with the media, philanthropic foundations, private corporations, government agencies and officials, and NGOs. Will manage web content and social media for the School. [40%]
Development: The Associate Dean will be responsible for shaping the School???s strategic fundraising vision for the future. Will collaborate fully with School leadership on setting development priorities and short- and long-term goals. Identifies, cultivates, and solicits major gifts, including planned gifts, in consultation with the Dean based upon the overall strategic goals for the SSW, including raising funds for SSW initiatives and programs. Stewards donor relationships. Provides primary support for the Dean???s Advisory Council. Oversees special events that underscore the School???s research and education efforts. Enhances strategy for increasing corporate and foundation giving in collaboration with CSSW faculty. Develops and tracks metrics for fundraising and expansion of scholarship support. Collaborates and consults with the Vice President for University Development as appropriate. [30%]
Alumni Affairs: The Associate Dean will be responsible for overseeing the design and implementation of programs that promote lifelong connections with the School???s alums. Will coordinate events that engage alums and expand awareness of the School???s research and educational initiatives. In addition to networking events, will develop publications (including emails and social media), reunions, alumni magazines/newsletters, and alumni directories and tracking systems. Will devise and implement additional ways of honoring CSSW alums, including special awards and other forms of recognition. Will work closely with the Office of Career Services to build stronger connections between current students and alums. Will prepare briefing materials for the Dean for meetings, incorporating the latest information on alums, donors, and friends of the School. [10%]
Supervision: Will supervise staff by recruiting, hiring, training, assigning tasks, and evaluating performance. In coordination with the Dean, will establish unit???s priorities and manage workflow. Will work to resolve issues of performance in consultation with HR unit as appropriate. Staff supervised will typically include full-time and part-time exempt and non-exempt employees. [10%]
Budget: Will manage unit???s overall budget. Will develop yearly budgets in consultation with School???s Office of Financial Management. Will ensure compliance with University and School policies. Will review and authorize reimbursement requests for direct reports. [5%]
Special Projects: Will execute special cross-school, cross-sectoral projects on behalf of the Dean and the School, focused on direct impact of Social Work on well-being and in support of evolving vision and priorities. [5%]
A minimum of ten years of related senior management experience in academic/non-profit institutions, or equivalent combinations of education and experience.
Superb writing/communication skills and experience in crisis management are required.
Must have experience personally soliciting six figure+ gifts; developing proposals for foundations and individuals; and overseeing an annual fund.
Experience should include public affairs, project management, marketing initiatives, crisis communications, budget development, and staff supervision.
Must have relevant experience navigating complex bureaucracies and collaborating with diverse audiences.
Must have a proven track record of success in leading complex, impactful communication strategies and initiatives that leverage knowledge of higher education, ability to mobilize cross-school teams, and understanding of the mission of service-oriented professional schools.
Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and donor database applications.
Availability for occasional evening and weekend work required.
Master???s degree in Communications, Writing, Nonprofit Administration, or related field. Ideal candidate will have 15 + years of related senior management experience. Prior experience in an academic setting.
