GCE Lab School is seeking a candidate who is ready to move into a Development Director role; a candidate who balances excellent organizational and project management skills with an entrepreneurial approach to donor cultivation. Experience with grant writing and comfortability engaging with corporate CSR groups a huge plus. A key position at this young and innovative school, this role promises to be fast-paced and full of opportunity to grow this team.
Reporting to the Head of School and in close collaboration with the Board Chair, this individual will play a critical role in building and managing GCE’s development systems, donor cultivation strategies, and new donor prospect outreach and events. GCE is comprised of a high school and GCE Learning Labs; the latter provides programming to extend the school’s best practices in project-based experiential learning to educators, students and their families.
We are currently one year into the “quiet” phase of a 4-year comprehensive campaign to raise $10M. To date, we have raised $2.5M. At the completion of this 4-yr campaign, we anticipate an annual fundraising requirement of $500k.
Partner with the Head of School, Board, Parent Organization, and GCE faculty and staff, to develop and execute GCE’s annual and long-term fundraising plan, laying the groundwork for future growth.
Identify primary donor groups and create targeted development plans to cultivate each group and ensure their ongoing support (e.g., parents, alumni, donors, foundations, community partners, etc.).
Attend events, identify opportunities to cultivate new donor prospects, and solicit gifts in partnership with Head of School, Board and Parent Organization
Maintain a communication system with primary donor groups, including solicitation materials/collateral, follow-up actions, and reports to key stakeholders as necessary to promote participation and optimize the donor experience.
Lead the Board of Directors Development Committee and ensure members are equipped with the skills necessary to engage networks and colleagues in GCE’s mission; attend board meetings (6 per year)
Grant Oversight & Management
Manage 1-2 support staff in executing the strategic development plan.
Develop strategic partnerships with corporations and foundations to leverage GCE’s visibility and impact on education in Chicago and beyond
Manage the grant-writing process: identifying funding sources, writing & submitting proposals, drafting outcomes & metrics, and submitting all required documentation
Manage the overall grant portfolio and reporting structure to ensure compliance requirements are met
Education, Training and/or Experience
Bachelor’s Degree plus proven development experience (e.g., fundraising, donor cultivation, systems management, implementation of policies and procedures, etc.)
Experience executing fundraising plans and soliciting donations from targeted donor groups.
Experience managing large, complex projects from concept through fruition with a high degree of detail-orientation
Experience managing high-stakes relationships with an eye towards customer service and the highest level of professional etiquette

Majority of work performed in a general office or high school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. May require participation and attendance at organization and community sponsored events and meetings. Some travel by car and air may be required.
