This position is with the Application & Web Development Team, part of Information Technology Services at West Virginia University Health Sciences. We are a small team of senior developers and we're looking to add a new developer with at least four years' experience to our team. We work closely with three other talented groups: Design, Systems, and Support specialists.
We are proud of the custom software we build and maintain. We approach our work thoughtfully and define success not in the speed of new releases, but the quality and utility of what we build. We have built and maintain over 50 smaller applications that serve customers in Health Sciences. Our flagship product is the SOLE learning management system. SOLE is a complete LMS and provides API and development framework for our applications. Another major product is a large Rural Health grant data and business process management application called Tracker .
About the Opportunity:
As Application Developer, you'll be contributing to a suite of applications built and maintained in-house, with primary focus on our SOLE Learning Management System/development platform and Tracker, a Rural Health grant data collection/business process management application. You'll work on a C# .Net stack with an MS SQL Server database system. You'll use Visual Studio 2019 Pro, ReSharper, MSDN, Jira, Bitbucket, and TeamCity, among others. You'll work independently and take ownership of projects while consulting with other team members for guidance and support as needed. We are an open team and believe we are stronger when we support each other.
We are interested in your professional development. We use Pluralsight and think it's important to make time each week to explore new skills and concepts. We are all working remotely and use Slack and Zoom to stay in touch. We have a couple weekly meetings but prefer not to load up our calendars.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or related field OR an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
A minimum of four (4) years of experience involving:
Design, development and implementation of complex applications and database systems, especially web-based applications.
Source control, preferably Git.
Preferred experience with:
C#, .NET, ASP.NET MVC and ASP.NET Core web application development and MS SQL database design and query construction.
Strong interpersonal skills and enjoy participating in technical discussions with the team toward evaluation, analysis, and planning of application development.
What you'll do:
Work relatively independently and in consultation with technical experts to define systems design requirements, and to develop and implement complex systems.
Participate in planning, designing, and carrying out various projects.
Lead and participate in technical application design, and development and provide general assistance to the team in development of projects, including troubleshooting and testing.
Be responsible for software architecture and implementation of design patterns across assigned applications.
Confirm functionality and validity of web applications by independent verification and validation (IV&V). This may include leading and/or participating in verification through code reviews and inspections and validation including unit, integration, functional, regression, system, load, and user-acceptance testing.
Provide technical troubleshooting on complex issues requiring rapid resolution.
Manage and assist with custom report generation and data analysis for several annual reports and grant projects.
This position allows for flexibility in work location, you can chose either hybrid or fully remote/virtual, with a preference for those within travel distance of Morgantown.
Within 1 month you'll:
Complete WVU's on-boarding process, including setting up your benefits.
Get introduced to our SOLE development platform and utilities.
Understand the basics of the Rural Health domain and the complexity of grant requirements.
Have one-on-ones with other programmers, and with Directors and Assistant Directors in the Application & Web team to learn about the roles of the Development, Design, Systems and Support groups.
Complete at least one small or mid-size programming assignment as in introduction to our tools and platform.
Meet some primary stakeholders in our applications.
Within 3 months you'll:
Be working on larger projects and on complete components as part of a larger application.
Complete at least one significant programming project, complete with unit and/or integration tests and IV&V.
Have a strong understanding of our programming domains and responsibilities.
Contribute to technical discussions and planning as part of the team.
Within 6 months you'll:
Have management of complete applications, components, or modules that you build.
Participate in code reviews.
Be able to work directly with customers to solve problems, understanding when to seek input from the team or other stakeholders.
Have robust understanding of the Rural Health domain.
Be very familiar with SOLE utilities and tools.
Contribute to architecture and planning for future application modules.
