The Becker Library is committed to pursuing best practices and innovative ideas in collecting, curating, and promoting academic research and public interest in the archival collections of the Washington University School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals.
Becker Library’s Archives and Rare Books (ARB) Division is seeking a Processing Archivist to develop highly efficient processing workflows that follow best practices for arranging collection materials, and utilize the appropriate metadata schemas and standards when completing all description work.� With great attention to detail, the Processing Archivist will contribute descriptive data to our archival platform (AtoM).
In addition to archival processing, other core duties of this position include frequent creation of content for use in the library’s blog and social media platforms, participation in the department’s open house events, curation of exhibits, and providing high-quality reference service to our researchers.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Preserve, arrange, describe, and make accessible the library’s archival collections for the School of Medicine community and the general public.
Develop and implement efficient processing workflows and procedures.
Promote the access and discovery of ARB collections.
Regularly contribute to the library’s social media platforms and ARB’s blog.
Provide instruction and presentations for group visits and student classes using material from the archival and rare book collections.
Collaborate with other ARB staff members to plan, design, and curate quarterly exhibitions of artifacts, photographs, ephemera, rare books, and archival material in the Glaser Gallery.
Ensure appropriate organization and maintenance of collection storage areas.
Participate in library and campus committees.
Provide reference and research services to visitors, employees, and scholars in the ARB Reading Room, and provide high-quality service via phone and/or email to researchers who are unable to request assistance in-person.
Identify appropriate collection materials for digitization.
Identify and address legacy arrangement and description issues.
Perform other job related duties as required or assigned.
Equivalent of a master’s degree in library science or a related area.
Ability to handle library programs and supervisory responsibilities.
Master’s degree in history, library science, archival administration, or a related field.
Demonstrated ability to acquire new skills and learn new technology.
Understanding of essential features and functionality of content management systems and archival collection discovery tools.
Experience working with metadata on archival collections.
Strong communication skills (oral and written).
Knowledge of, and demonstrated commitment to, values associated with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
Knowledge of current archival trends and best practices.
Two years of work history in a museum, library, or archives environment with responsibility for arranging and describing archival collections.
Two years of experience working with an archival management system (Archon, Archivists’ Toolkit, ArchivesSpace, AtoM, etc.).
Experience providing reference service using archival materials.
Experience contributing social media content to a business/academic account.
Experience curating exhibits with special collection materials.
Experience marketing and promoting special collections.
Experience teaching with special collections.
The hiring range for this position is $48,087 - $62,517 annually.
