The Visual Arts faculty member will be conversant in both traditional visualization skills as well as concepts and skills relevant to contemporary graphic design practices, demonstrating a dedication to education, a proven track record of teaching excellence, and professional work experience in their area of specialization. The faculty member's primary area of responsibility will be teaching courses relevant to the study and practice of Graphic Design. An ability to teach lecture and theory-based courses in areas such as art and design history and art appreciation is also desirable. The faculty member will assist in forward-thinking, interdisciplinary curriculum design and development, the assessment of courses and programs, the selection of support materials for the classroom, and will engage in activities that support the Art department's relationship to the community at large.
A. Teaching Load The normal teaching load for each full-time faculty member shall be fifteen (15) contact hours per semester, with a maximum of thirty (30) contact hours per academic year. If a full-time faculty member teaches a studio art course as part of the load, he or she is then required to teach sixteen (16) contact hours in the fall semester and fifteen (15) contact hours in the spring semester.
B. Office Hours Each faculty member shall maintain four (4) office hours per week for consultation with students. A faculty member will be expected to be present in his/her office during the posted office hours and if a student's schedule conflicts with the faculty member's office hours, the faculty member will provide reasonable accommodation to the student. Faculty who teach overload courses will be available to students in those courses.
C. Faculty Responsibilities
1. Attend department and program meetings. 2. Hold classes as scheduled. 3. Start classes on time and conduct class for the full scheduled time period. 4. Comply with all safety, fire, and smoking regulations. 5. Attend all appropriate in-service functions. 6. Attend all mandatory compliance training. 7. Submit grades as scheduled in the academic calendar. 8. Attend meetings of the Faculty Assembly. 9. Attend College Committee Meetings. 10. Provide students with a written statement of course requirements and expectations which shall include the attendance and grading policy, course objectives, and a course outline. 11. Retain all course documentation, including but not limited to grading and faculty member's test copies, for a period of not less than three (3) years upon the completion of the course. 12. Observe the approved departmental master course syllabus. 13. Attend Commencement. 14. Attend Fall Opening Day ceremonies. 15. Attend at least one designated division meeting per semester (Fall & Spring). 16. Represent the Visual Arts department in open houses, periodically. 17. Assist the department Chair in identifying discipline specific equipment and facility needs. 18. Advise the department Chair in constructing the master schedule of courses (Fall, Spring, Summer) 19. Advise the Marlin Gallery in the selection of exhibiting artists. 20. Participate in the assessment of courses and programs in the department. 21. Assist in the advising of Visual Arts majors. 22. Assist in developing marketing, recruitment, and promotional strategies for the department. 23. Comply with all safety, fire, and smoking regulations. 24. Complete all mandatory compliance and safety training as scheduled by Human Resources. 25. Perform other duties as assigned. PHYSICALREQUIREMENTS
1. Dexterity in working with computers is mandatory.2. Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time.3. This position requires mobility throughout the campus/College locations.
1. Master's of Fine Arts Degree (MFA) in Graphic Design, Illustration or related field in Fine Art. Additional studies and/or practice in the Fine Arts desired. 2. 3-5 years of teaching experience in a higher education setting, preferably at the community college level. 3. A portfolio of professional work. 4. Excellent knowledge of appropriate technologies relevant to courses assigned, including Adobe Creative Suite, use of large scale digital printers and peripherals and the ability to update knowledge as needed. 5. Excellent oral and written communication skills. 6. Ability to address the role of visual culture as appropriate to a diverse, multicultural workplace.
