Purpose Statement The purpose of the Director of Digital Arts is to grow a robust Film Program and Digital Media Department with a focus on grades 6-12, including teaching film and photography courses and summer camps, supervising other digital arts teachers, and creating co-curricular opportunities such as internships and a student film festival to serve the needs of students who are passionate about film and digital arts.
Position Summary The Director of Digital Arts will teach the digital photography and film courses in the Upper School, including foundational and advanced courses in film production, film and media history, and reports to the Director of Upper School. The Director of Digital Arts will be responsible for creating a vibrant program, encompassing course work, internship opportunities, and school-wide events. The ideal candidate will hold a degree in film or a related field, with experience teaching film, developing curriculum, and engaging lesson plans. This person will have experience in leading-edge production equipment and software and be computer proficient. Program development experience is required. The Director of Digital Arts will maintain professional contacts in the film and digital media arts fields while remaining attuned to changing technologies and methodologies. Demonstrated commitment to grow both as an artist and educator and continuation of professional development is expected. This person will work closely with the Assistant Head of School for Academics and with school-level directors to ensure and foster a vibrant curriculum, healthy professional dialogue, and distinguished teaching. Lastly, the Director of Digital Arts must demonstrate collegiality and ability to work across the school community.
Responsibilities of Director of Digital Arts Teaching foundational and advanced courses in film production, film and media history Teaching digital photography courses Managing all program planning and all curricular development Supervising digital film teachers Seeking out and assisting students in film festival entries, competitions and college application portfolios Maintaining all aspects of a media lab, including equipment, materials and budget Managing and configuring software, classroom AV equipment and other peripherals Documenting and archiving student work Assessing, recording and maintaining student progress via the school’s learning management system Accounting for student attendance and punctuality Preparing adequately for responsibilities to be assumed when absent Participating in all school meetings, training and professional development Collaborating with Visual and Performing Arts and PR departments Cultivating excellent communication with students, department members and administration Maintaining professional contacts in the film, video and digital media arts fields while remaining attuned to changing technologies and methodologies Continuation of professional development work as a filmmaker, and a commitment to growth both as an artist and educator Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in film or related field preferred Experience in teaching film and program development Experience developing curriculum and engaging, challenging lesson plans Background in all aspects of film; preference for experience in narrative film, film direction and sound design Experience with a variety of leading-edge, industry-standard production equipment and software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro Experienced in innovative teaching practices and differentiated instruction Excellent verbal and communication skills, ability to create successful relationships with high school students Strong organizational skills, leadership skills, and flexibility
Strongly preferred: ? Experience teaching digital photography ? Experience with digital photography equipment and editing software such as Photoshop ? Professional film production experience ? Supervisory experience
