The Department of Pathology at the University of Iowa Health Care is currently accepting applications for a Medical Laboratory Scientist opening. This position will be 1st shift, 0800-1630, Monday - Friday.
Duties: Utilizing a variety of procedures involving highly complex molecular analytical test methodologies and techniques, perform quantitative and qualitative clinical laboratory analysis on biological specimens such as peripheral blood bone marrow, and FFPEtissue. These procedures will utilize a variety of highly complex testing platforms and including Next Generation Sequencing, real-time PCR, RT-PCR, Droplet Digital PCR, Optical Genome Mapping and southern blot hybridization that require the use of professional judgment. Provide technical expertise and information used to diagnose or treat disease.

A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution
6 months – 1-year clinical laboratory experience, which may include program training experience is required.
At least one year of recent (within last one year) experience in human genetic applications including, but not limited to, nucleic acid preparation, sequencing and analysis by Next Generation Sequencing on the 5SXL and Illumina platforms is required.
Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a categorical/specialist certification in the appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Coursework in molecular genetics of at least one year OR more than two years of molecular clinical laboratory experience OR an equivalent combination of molecular genetics coursework and molecular clinical laboratory experience is highly desired.
Prior experience in testing of human genomic information/bioinformatics (e.g., aCGH or expression arrays, and next-generation sequencing) is highly desired.
Additional Salary Information: Starting salary is $45,826. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
