As a member of the project team, the Estimator provides estimates for capital improvement and renovation construction projects for the leadership of Stony Brook Medicine. The cost estimates to include labor, material, and equipment requirements for construction by the hospital construction department and or contracted contractors. The incumbent will use construction industry standards, construction drawings, specifications, visual inspections and user meetings to formalize the construction estimate/rough order of magnitude.
Duties of an Estimator may include the following but are not limited to:
Reviews construction drawings/schematic plans, specifications to develop cost estimates or rough order of magnitude in ProEst for design, construction and renovation projects. Conducts field investigation of the project site to determine project constraints. Confers with technical, professional and department leaders, designers, consultants, vendors, and contractors to establish and prepare detailed cost estimates.
Assists in preparation of bid proposals by calculating the complete takeoff and cost estimate for scope of work.
Maintains complete project documentation records for all estimates in Projectmates.
Maintains construction estimating software procurement, implementation and updates as needed.
Develops policies and procedures in support of estimating process.
Participates in the procurement review process for bids for construction, materials, and services.
Participates in request for qualification review process for architectural and engineering services.
Works with PMO and construction department to monitor actual labor, materials, equipment cost, contractor costs, quantity and rates verses the approved estimate.
Works with PMO to develop change order estimates. Reviews change orders for validity.
Participates in the green building/sustainability Practice Green Health initiative.
Participates in the estimate meeting to review the cost estimate with architectural services, finance, and Sr. Project Manager.
Participates in the capital planning process for the Facilities Department.
Participate in planning and construction meetings are required.
Develop material list for use by construction department.
* Associates degree or higher in engineering, architectural, or construction field.
* Five years' experience working as a cost estimator in the construction field.
* Ability to read and understand the complexity of construction drawings.
* Familiarity with local building codes, national fire codes, knowledge of construction for "constructability, strong organizational and time-management skills.
* Proficient with electronic take off methods.
* Must be well versed in new construction, renovations and alterations, possess effective- communication skills verbal/written with vendors, user groups, high level leadership, design firms and construction contractors.
* Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
* Computer literacy and experience with spreadsheet and project management programs are essential.
* Proficiency in estimating computer programs.
* Experience in estimating tasks ranging in value, type and complexity from $5K to over $5M.
* Bachelor's Degree or higher in engineering, architectural or construction field
* Experience of estimating new construction/renovation projects in a health care setting.
