OCTRI's Community Research Hub develops and implements strategies that build community engaged research capacity and community-academic partnerships to improve the health and wellness of all Oregonians. The Hub is located in Bend, Oregon and supports Community Research Liaisons in 5 Oregon regions.
The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. Driven by its mission to end cancer as we know it, the institute is building upon its expertise in targeted treatments to advance the early detection of cancer when the disease is most treatable. The Knight Cancer Institute Community Outreach and Engagement (COE)programaims to identify and address cancer health disparities among minority and/or underserved populations, including rural, through relevant research, community outreach, engagement and education, and through program and partnerships.
This position is a remote position serving Coos, Curry and Douglas counties and has overarching community outreach, research, and engagement work for multiple Oregon Health & Science (OHSU) programs: the Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute (OCTRI) Community Research Hub (Hub) and the Knight Cancer Institute Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) program. All aspects of this position call for a candidate who can serve as liaison between OHSU and the regions defined boundaries.
The Community Research Liaison will be supported by the Hub and live in the regions defined boundaries of Coos, Curry and Douglas Counties. This position plays a critical role in implementing and supporting community engaged research activities with and between OHSU and partners working to address regionally-identified needs. This position will work under the direction of the Community Research Program Manager and collaboratively with other staff to support community-academic partnerships and help build capacity for community engaged research across Oregon.
The Liaison will also serve as a local community health educator (CHE). In this role, they will be responsible for identifying community-based opportunities to implement evidence-based cancer activities, specific to the needs of the South Coast community. The person who fills this role will work to deliver cancer health education (e.g. HPV vaccination, colorectal cancer, etc.) and establish linkages to cancer care in the region (e.g. increase local access to HPV vaccinations, support for patients interested in clinical trials). This portion of the position will report to the Manager of COE and participate on a team of community health educators and outreach specialists.
Bachelors Degree (4 yr) with major courses in field of research and 1 to 3 years of relevant experience; ORAA/RN (2 yr) and 3 years of relevant experience
Demonstrated interest and experience in research, health education and/or health promotion in individual, group or community setting
Ability to speak and communicate clearly, respectfully, and consistently with researchers and community members
Organized and detail-oriented self-starter
Must be able to work independently and as a member of a team
Ability to build rapport with community-based organizations and individuals
Computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat DC
Ability to utilize project management and database systems to record, track and report
Ability to manage and perform multiple tasks under conditions of fluctuating workloads, competing requirements, and changing deadlines
Work independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction
Ability to think analytically and devise creative solutions to problems
Prior experience conducting and/or supporting programmatic and/or data-driven activities in an academic or community setting
Prior experience in meeting facilitation, public speaking and presentation development
Prior experience conducting community-based research
Previous experience working with community-based coalitions and community members around health
Experience preparing academic manuscripts and popular media to share research results

Working conditions:
This position requires that the employee live within the defined research liaison region of Coos, Curry and Douglas Counties. Regular travel required within this region as well as occasional travel to other locations around Oregon, including the OHSU Portland and the OHSU Community Research Hub office in Bend campus for training and team meetings
Physical demands & equipment usage:
Ability to sit for five to six hours in a day. Involves frequent use of computers.
