Department Description
The California National Primate Research Center is an Organized Research Unit which conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health related problems where nonhuman primates are the animal models of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the Primate Center is also committed to its missions of teaching and service. This position will provide technical assistance and project support for animal related experiments conducted by the Virology & Immunology Unit. Employee will be required to work with animals that are infected with HIV or SIV viruses.
Job Summary
Under general supervision, in the Research Services SAIDS Unit, provide research project coordination and technical support for a variety of research projects involving primates infected with SIV, TB, influenza, measles, and other infectious agent. Observing BSL-2+ precautions, perform physical examinations and collect various biological samples, including CSF taps, venipuncture, lavage, lymph node biopsy, cystocentesis, bone marrow aspirate, and tracheal aspirate; conduct inoculations with infectious materials; transport animals offsite for imaging; induce and monitor anesthesia (gas, injectable); conduct IV infusions; other procedures as described by individual protocols. Assist PIs on/off site in the management and coordination of their research projects, which includes preparing work orders for services to support project goals, assist at necropsy by collecting and processing various tissues. Work with investigators and veterinarians to develop and implement treatment plans for animals. Evaluate health status of project animals and keep investigators apprised of changes or therapeutic treatments. Administer experimental drugs and vaccines to nonhuman primates per established protocol.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Substantial contact with animals, including capture and restraint of animals that may weigh up to 35 pounds.
Squatting, kneeling, bending, stooping, or standing up to 8 hours per day.
Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, PAPR, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level (BSL) 1, 2, or 3 conditions where nonhuman primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous diseases such as HIV, SIV, or Herpes B virus.
Employee is required to work with animals/tissue that is infected with the HIV/SIV virus.
This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity check.
Measles vaccination or proof of illness required. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
Employee shall participate in required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs which may include blood tests, immunizations, TB screening, Blood borne and Airborne Pathogen training, etc., and are provided to meet Federal, State and University requirements.
Restricted vacation during peak workload periods. Work irregular shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evenings. Work overtime, occasional weekends on short notice.
Serve on-call on designated weekends, providing emergency technical support during non-standard work hours, including nights, weekends and holidays

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Academic background in animal science, science research; or applied technical training in animal laboratory science; or the equivalent combination of education, training, and professional technical experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
Experience with applied principles of immunology and virology.
Applied technical experience in animal science using non-human primate handling, advanced technical and aseptic and sterile laboratory animal surgical techniques in nonhuman primates infected with diseases, working with infection control, sample collection, inoculations, husbandry, and nonhuman primate research project management according to study protocols.
Experience in research project coordination principles and practices that include creating and managing complex schedules, research data collection, laboratory protocols/SOP's; billing/recharge of services provided and communicating with multiple PIs/researchers.
Experience working with non-human primates, which includes administering medications and experimental drug (intravenously, orally, intramuscular and subcutaneous), and venipuncture, catheter placement, anesthesia assistance and monitoring.
Applied technical research knowledge and applied technical animal laboratory science experience working with nonhuman primate that are infected with SIV, TB, influenza, measles, and other infectious agent, observing BSL-2+ biohazard precautions and experimental procedures.
Experience with Medical Waste disposal and shipping regulations for research samples/infectious agents and disposal/handling of radioactive materials. Experience in biohazard containment procedures necessary for performance in BioSafety Level (BSL) 2 or 3 facility.
Knowledge and ability to perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level (BSL) 2 or 3 conditions facility where non-human primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous infectious agents such as HIV, SIV, TB, or Herpes B virus.
Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in Animal Laboratory Science, Immunology, Virology, and Physiology or related scientific discipline with an emphasis the study of primate behavior, care and reproduction; and primate restraint and training.
Experience working under lab animal research and Animal Use Protocols.
Experience in performing basic acute care and animal health monitoring.
Skills to communicate and interact with vendors, lab supervisors, veterinary staff and investigators.
Mathematical skills to enable calculation of concentrations and volumes of samples and solutions.
Computer skills using standard office-type software and PDAs (word processing and spreadsheet software) and willingness to learn new software packages.
Animal Technologist (LATG) certification.
American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) technician certification: Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT).
Knowledge of USDA regulations and AALAS practices and protocols pertaining to primate non-human animal models.
Knowledge of concepts, principles, and conduct of research in immunology and virology.
Ability to work well in a team situation with a variety of people.
Ability to handle infectious animals and/or agents in confined workrooms.
Understanding of and ability to use scientific terminology effectively when speaking and/or writing.
Ability to organize, summarize and schedule technical procedures and data.
