Summary of Duties:
Perform research under the supervision of Dr. Levente Kapas and researchers within the Kapas Lab in the area of the neurobiological basis of sleep, circadian rhythms and related central nervous system functions in rodents. Work performed includes working in a lab environment and keeping detailed records of studies conducted and experimental results, ordering laboratory supplies and supporting the research of other lab members.
40% In vivo Experimentation
Under the Principal Investigator's direction, work on research projects to study the neurobiological basis of sleep, circadian rhythms and related central nervous system functions in rodents.
Plan and execute experiments to include maintaining and inventorying experimental and breeding colonies, administering pharmacological and biological agents, assessing behavior and health, blood sampling, tissue dissection and sampling, surgical implantation, and post-operative care.
35% Data Analysis and Records Management
Collect, record, verify and analyze data; compile information; prepare charts, graphs and reports.
Keep detailed records of studies conducted and experimental results.
Maintain and ensure compliance with regulatory and safety protocols and records.
Assist with set up, calibrate, monitor performance and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and scientific instrumentation.
Maintain laboratory inventory and experimental animal breeding colony inventory, order lab supplies and equipment as necessary.
20% Laboratory Work
Operation of a variety of lab instruments such as thermal cycler, flow cytometer, cell sorter, microarray reader, fluorescent microscopes, incubators, pH meters, spectrophotometer, and other measuring instruments; operate ancillary equipment such as photographic and computer equipment; prepare laboratory reagents and chemicals; service and maintain laboratory instruments; order chemicals, reagents and other supplies.
Ensure lab equipment is properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures. Assist with general lab maintenance and cleaning.
Other duties as required.
Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions, training and supervising students and part time help.
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent related field experience performing professional-level work with scientific or clinical research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; interviewing experience; excellent organizational and project management skills.
Bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, neurobiology, or other relevant field.
General knowledge in biology.
Proficient in Microsoft Office including, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
At least 1 year experience in a laboratory setting.
Experience of working with research animals, animal or human tissue samples.
