The Research Application Analyst role is intended to be filled by two skilled individuals who will use a service-oriented approach and apply problem solving, critical thinking, and organization skills in support of multiple mission-critical applications – REDCap and the CTR Portal. The incumbents will collaborate with other IT professionals and experts to support and maintain these critical systems for thousands of University of Minnesota (UMN) application users and external collaborators. This role will also provide data management services for research projects, including data capture form development and maintenance. The Research Application Analyst works within the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and reports to the CTSI IT Director.
REDCap Administration, Support, Application Analysis, and Training – 30%
- Provide high quality and timely responses to REDCap end-user support requests. - Conduct live REDCap office-hours, coordinated through CTSI’s Clinical Research Support - Center (CRSC), to provide staff education and personalized support. - Collaborate with the CTSI Workforce Training and Development team to offer occasional site-wide training opportunities and educational offerings. - Coordinate and execute change management activities for REDCap, such as vendor-provided upgrades. Analyze the impact of the changes, develop and execute test plans, and coordinate modifications with Health Sciences Technology (HST) Operations. - Coordinate REDCap custom plug-in development with HST developers (i.e. PHP code adjustments). - Communicate changes to REDCap end-users. - Maintain and enhance REDCap training and end-user documentation. - Conduct quality assurance activities to identify and address areas needing additional documentation, training, or other process improvements. - Provide security monitoring activities of the REDCap application and report security incidents. - Participate in the global REDCap community webinars, email lists, and conferences to keep up with knowledge, advocate for UMN enhancements, and to share best-practices. - Conduct occasional live presentations for the research community, CRSC, or the global REDCap community to share knowledge and best-practices. - Participate in the development of team and user SOP’s and guidelines
REDCap Study Data Management – 15% - Serve as a REDCap Data Manager on grant-funded and department-funded projects. - Set up and maintain REDCap forms for UMN projects, including clinical trials, for study staff to enter data. - Set up or create reports within REDCap. - Track effort on funded projects for invoicing. - Train staff how to use the data capture forms. - Work with the CTSI Biostatistical Design and Analysis Center (BDAC) to ensure alignment with statistical analysis requirements. Support BDAC with data exports. - Understand the REDCap database and write ad-hoc SQL queries for data extraction.
CTR Portal Administration, Support, and Training – 30% - Provide high quality and timely responses to Portal end-user support requests. - Analyze CTR Portal enhancement requests, bugs, fixes and communicate trends to the RDS development team effectively. - Manage communication and training efforts for the CTR Portal, including designing and delivering Portal application trainings for CTSI and UMN staff. - Train new CTSI staff on how to effectively use and understand the CTR Portal; including creating user guides, setting up specific access levels, and troubleshooting individual issues via individual trainings. - Set up or create reports on Portal data. Write ad-hoc data queries as needed. - Provide security monitoring activities of the Portal application and report security incidents.
CTR Portal Analysis and Continued Improvement – 15% - Prepare for future application developments and changes with the CTR Portal Development and Operations Team. - Analyze and document Portal-related requirements for application additions and changes. - Ensure proper setup of service areas, service lines, billing codes, staff, and identification of associated reference numbers for other systems/organizations (i.e. Finance systems, Clinical Trial Management System, IRB). - Review Portal usage and support trends to confirm processes are followed which result in proper setup of project records. Suggest and implement changes to improve the reliability of Portal data. - Conduct quality assurance and data clean-up activities. - Actively define and execute testing of enhancements and new processes related to the Portal. - Participate in the development of team and user SOP’s and guidelines.
Other Duties as Assigned - 10% - Collaborate with the Health Sciences Technology (HST) on special projects, such as applications or report projects led by HST or other groups that may consume data from the Portal. Provide QA or serve as a data expert as needed. - Participate as an application expert in special projects, such as data interface and integration efforts and new development projects. - Collaborate with CTSI Communications, team members, and key stakeholders to maintain and update information available to the research community and the public via the CTSI website. - Additional duties will include but will not be limited to: Provide expertise and share best-practices, support organizational and IT change management activities, and attending routine team meetings.

Required: - BA/BS in a related field (i.e., Computer Science, Computer Programming, etc.) and two years of related work experience in system support, data management, analysis, and problem resolution; or a combination of related education and work experience in system support, data management, analysis, and problem resolution to equal six years. - Demonstrated experience with web-based database systems, such as purchasing, time tracking, research data management, and project management tools. - Experience writing SQL queries. - Customer service oriented – demonstrated an outstanding level of service for diverse range of individuals.
Preferred: - Working knowledge of regulatory compliance such as FDA CFR Title 21 Part 11 and HIPAA. - Experience working with REDCap. - Experience building clinical or research data capture forms. - Experience working with the CTR Portal. - Experience conducting quality assurance on reports and data visualizations. - Data management experience. - PHP programming experience. - Experience with application upgrades. - Experience writing and executing application test plans. - Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships at all organizational levels. - Strong organizational skills, including the ability to handle multiple assignments and tasks while meeting deadlines. - Strong written and verbal communication skills. - Ability to bring and act on new ideas to improve processes and systems. - Application security monitoring and issue resolution. - Experienced working with Microsoft SQL database Server. - Experience working with Oracle database systems. - Previous experience supporting research systems. - Previously developed or conducted training for an IT application. - Experience in an academic and/or research environment. - Experience with a statistical software package (R, SAS, Stata).
