Mississippi State University Athletics is seeking a Senior Writer to join its communications and external team to illustrate the story of the department's student-athletes, coaches, staff, and teams. This position will work closely with the Associate Athletic Director/Communications, in addition to working alongside the communications, marketing and creative teams. The candidate must have strong knowledge of social media and digital platforms as well as outstanding writing and strategic communications skills. Travel will be required as well as working long hours and weekends.
1. Write features, columns, recaps, and human-interest pieces focusing on the department's student-athletes, coaches and teams for HailState.com. 2. Establish a social media and digital presence to assist in the storytelling of the department, including via video interviews and an audio podcast. 3. Write scripts for various creative content throughout the athletic year. 4. Work closely with the external unit to create content and provide support to help the department reach its goals in revenue generation, fan experience and brand awareness. 5. Assist the Director of Athletics and Associate Athletic Director/Communications in messaging and correspondence. 6. Travel with various teams to report on sporting events throughout the year as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director/Communications. 7. Complete other departmental tasks as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director/Communications.
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism with two (2) years of full time writing experience in college or professional athletics.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Ability to travel with various teams. 2. Ability to work long hours, including nights and weekends. 3. Excellent written and oral communication skills. 4. Knowledge of media, media relations concepts and principles, print and electronic media outlets, accurate writing skills.
