Two-Year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: Slavery, Memory & Justice
Description The College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a Two-Year Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Slavery, Memory and Justice to begin in August 2021. The College of the Holy Cross is committed to examining and sharing information about its history in relationship to slavery. This history is situated within a larger history of Jesuit and American higher education institutions that benefited from slavery and the sale of enslaved people. Similar institutional efforts are well documented at many institutions of higher education. The history of the College of the Holy Cross is intertwined with Georgetown University's history. The goal of this postdoctoral position is to gather and organize the College's history in relationship to slavery and to make it visible to members of our campus community, alumni and the larger society. Acknowledging, documenting and disseminating this history is an important step towards justice. In addition to the historical and archival scholarship, the postdoctoral fellow will produce a website, video resources, and additional resources that will allow faculty and staff to incorporate this history into the curriculum and other College programs and events, such as new student orientation.
The postdoctoral fellow will also serve as an institutional representative to consortia that are dedicated to exploring higher educational institutions' connections to slavery so that we may contribute to and learn from best practices in this work. In addition to access to the College's archives and support from the College's archivist, the College will identify a faculty mentor to provide support and guidance. The post-doctoral fellow will work closely with an institutional team that will support their work by turning ideas into tangible outcomes. The College will also provide resources for external speakers or other expertise to expand our institutional knowledge base.
While this position is primarily focused on research, the post-doctoral fellow will teach two courses during their two-year appointment to help build their teaching portfolio. Post-doctoral fellows are eligible for travel support and reimbursement of relocation costs within the College's published policies. This full-time appointment will have a salary no less than $59,100 and includes full benefits. Qualifications Candidates must demonstrate commitment to, and either excellence in or potential for, undergraduate teaching at the introductory and advanced levels as well as scholarly achievement. A Ph.D. in History, American Studies, African American Studies, or an interdisciplinary field with a focus on the study of slavery is required. Preference will be given to those who have received their Ph.D. in the last 4 years (since 2017). For those currently enrolled in a doctoral program, Ph.D. must be completed by August 2021.
We are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching interests focus on the systemic study of slavery within the American context. Candidates with experience studying slavery and how it benefited institutions are especially encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in digital humanities, public history and production of multimedia projects.
