UW Medicine’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department is a shared services organization that supports all of UW Medicine. UW Medicine is comprised of Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake Campus (UWMC-Montlake), UW Medical Center-Northwest Campus (UWMC-NW), Valley Medical Center (VMC), UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC), UW Physicians (UWP), UW School of Medicine (SOM) and Airlift Northwest (ALNW). In addition, UW Medicine shares in the ownership and governance of Children’s University Medical Group and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (a partnership between UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research and Seattle Children’s). ITS is responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support all of these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the UW Medicine mission.
In collaboration with UW Medicine IT Services (ITS) and under the general guidance of the Data Operations Manager, the primary focus of the Data Modeler is to work with customers to understand and translate business requirements into an efficient logical and physical data model, then manage the data model version control and change control.
The Analytics Group has a dual report into both ITS and UW School of Medicine and provides operational oversight for the major analytics platforms and tools at UW Medicine, and is a key support function as UW Medicine transitions towards value based health care. Within this Group, the Analytics DataOps Team is responsible for the end to end platforms supporting the data solutions we provide for enterprise data warehouse, reporting, analytics related data extracts, visualization and decision support. The platforms include Epic Cogito, Microsoft SQL Server, reporting tools, BOE and Tableau, with ongoing efforts to consolidate and simplify this stack.
The Data Modeler (1) plans with vision and foresight to provide high quality data, (2) identifies and defines common data requirements, and (3) designs conceptual structure and plans to the the current and long-term data requirements of UW Medicine constituents.
Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to: understanding and defining information needs; developing and maintaining data models through analysis and solution design, detailed data design, data model and design quality management and data implementation; analyzing and aligning with other business models; and defining and maintaining data technology architecture; data integration architecture; data warehouse (DW)/business intelligence (BI) architecture; taxonomies and namespaces; and meta-data architecture.
This position will collaborate with customers, management/leadership and a team of Analytics analysts, data architects and developers along with the partners of UW Medicine to to translate business rules into usable conceptual, logical, and physical models and database designs, identify and analyze data flaws, develop and integrate solutions, and maintain data models and architecture. The data models will support applications used in the daily work of practitioners, clinicians, faculty, students and UW Medicine staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Data Modeling, Analysis, and Solution Design (30%) Understand and translate business needs into data models supporting long-term solutions. Implement data strategies, build data flows and develop conceptual data models with the Application Development team. Work with analytics solution consumers, business analysts and developers to create initial model requirements (grains, additive and non-additive measures, conformed attributes, etc.). Troubleshoot data anomalies and performance issues that arise during design and development. Create logical and physical data models using best practices to ensure high data quality and reduced redundancy. Validate business data objects for accuracy and completeness. Analyze data-related system integration challenges and propose appropriate solutions. Develop data models according to company standards. Optimize and update logical and physical data models to support new and existing projects. Recommend opportunities for reuse of data models in new environments. Understand and implement effective customer-focus solutions using the Epic Caboodle data model. SQL Development (25%) Perform discovery and prototype work in SQL, and work with data consumers to proceed from initial models and requirements to an actionable specification that meets the user’s needs. Present the model specification in design review meetings. Analyze the SQL queries used to produce current data marts to integrate new build with existing infrastructure. Work with senior architects to plan data mart extensions or the creation of new data marts as appropriate Implement extensions to existing data marts using a SQL query-based data warehouse development tool. Work with senior architects to implement new data mart components as required. Develop of SQL databases for a wide variety of applications and business uses, including backend data for web applications, data storage, and relational databases. Use data architecture and management to develop and scale SQL databases based on their departmental needs. Write and optimize SQL queries to store, sort, and retrieve data for basic and complex commands to retrieve and manage data across multiple tables. Analyze existing SQL queries for performance improvements. Continually seek out methods to better handle data and increase system efficiency by writing more complex and optimized queries, changing the way data is stored or structured, or bringing data onto a new server that can better meet the needs of the organization. Propose and develop new methodologies, suggest new queries, and institute best practices to further enhance database performance. Data Model and Design Quality Management (20%) Maintain conceptual, logical and physical data models along with corresponding metadata. Evaluate data models and physical databases for variances and discrepancies. Develop best practices for standard naming conventions and coding practices to ensure consistency of data models. Perform reverse engineering of physical data models from databases and SQL scripts. Guide System Analysts, Engineers, Programmers and others on project limitations and capabilities, performance requirements and interfaces. Review modifications to existing software to improve efficiency and performance. Examine new application design and recommend corrections if required. Planning and Documentation (20%) Utilizes industry best practices, creating and documenting best practices and technical requirements. Understand and ensure effective enterprise-level communication about the Epic Caboodle data model/product roadmap, including connections and impacts to other Epic and Analytic platform solutions/tools. Coordinates with Business Analysts, Data Architects, Structured Query Language (SQL) Administrators, BI Administrators, and technology professionals to understand and document technical requirements, capabilities, and limitations. Works as part of a large team and works towards shared business and department goals. Responsible for all project planning related to data modeling tasks including effort and completion date estimates. Perform and complete all tasks in the agreed upon time lines. Works independently on assigned tasks with minimal assistance. Other (5%) Support data warehouse infrastructure operations as part of an on-call rotation. Participate in all aspects of improving the team, including education/training of other team members and contributing to process/communication improvement initiatives. Work with manager to set professional goals for career development. Act as back-up for other team members and functions, as needed. REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field or equivalent combination of education/experience. 4+ years experience must include the following: 2+ years' experience supporting developers using enterprise reporting tools (examples are MS PowerBI, Tableau and/or Business Objects). 2+ years' experience with any version of SQL. The data warehouse tools we use are SQL based, not drag and drop tools. Working in this environment requires SQL fluency. Minimum of one Epic Data Model certifications, or completion within first 6 months of employment. Experience with a formal Data Modeling methodology.

This is an Information Technology deadline-driven work environment. Program operates within the confines of standard IT methodology: Design Review, IT Project Management, Change Control, Risk Assessment, and Code Management. The individual in this position is expected to work normal daytime hours. The majority of work is performed in an office environment during normal business hours or by telecommuting with manager approval; however, significant off-hours and weekends may be needed to resolve problems and respond to emergencies. This individual is expected to be available for emergencies (business continuity/disaster recovery efforts) on a 24x7 basis as needed. Must have the ability to meet in person as directed by manager. Because of the physically separated sites for UW Medicine, this position requires the ability to travel to alternative work locations as needed. Interacts with a variety of individuals within UW Medicine and ITS specifically. Must coordinate projects without direct supervisory authority. Must work within the constraints of multiple technical environments. ITS provides services to all UW Medicine organizations – HMC, UWMC-Montlake, UWMC-NW, VMC, UWNC, UWP, SOM, and ALNW.
