The Director of Communications leads branding, design, digital, editorial, messaging and public relations efforts at Cornell Tech, working closely with academic and administrative leadership. The director collaborates with constituents across the campus to develop a multi-year plan, including metrics, for advancing the visibility and understanding of Cornell Tech and its impact to targeted audiences. The position reports to the Chief Administrative Officer and supervises a small staff team while managing external vendors and freelancers.
The incumbent will:
Develop and lead execution of the campus communications strategy; effectively emphasizing core campus strengths and priorities across platforms including content creation.
Steward the Cornell Tech and Jacobs Institute brands, ensuring correct and proper usage of content, design and positioning elements on current and proposed marketing and communication media and materials (digital and traditional).
Advance the visibility of the campus and highlight its unique assets through placemaking and marketing activities.
Oversee internal and crisis communications for the campus in collaboration with campus leadership.
Serve as the resident communications expert and advisor for the Cornell Tech leadership and community, providing guidance on a wide range of topics, issues, and channels.
Foster on-going relationships with faculty, administrators, staff and students to keep current on key issues, current projects and accomplishments.
Liaise with Cornell University and its communications-related departments (as well as other campus partners including the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and the American Technion Society), helping to direct and coordinate joint projects that advance the goals of Cornell Tech.
Manage department operating and project budgets, the communication team as well as contracts with outside freelancers, public relations and other strategic communications vendors.

Bachelor's degree (Communications, English, Journalism or Marketing preferred) with at least five to seven years of relevant communications experience.
Superior communications, branding planning, public relations, strategic marketing, writing, editing and publication skills, and the creativity necessary to design and implement effective communications strategies and programs. Familiarity with AP Style a plus.
Proven ability to manage a multi-functional team; maintaining respectful, positive working relationships with all co-workers and the general public, and use good judgment in recognizing scope of authority.
Technical and digital experience with diverse platforms including video production, CMS (including Wordpress) and CRM platforms, website creation/maintenance, design (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite), and social media and networking a plus.
Demonstrated capacity to produce content for sophisticated communication outlets.
Creative, highly motivated and organized team builder and self-starter.
Prior experience establishing and growing a new brand and/or place in corporate or academic setting.
Previous experience working with academic programs and in particular focus on developing new academic programs; previous experience working with agency on branding and public relations (in an agency of record capacity).
Familiarity in admissions marketing; ability to work with admissions team to provide collateral and marketing tools focused on enrollment targets.
