Dept Marketing Statement Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced engineering professional to operate independently in a professional specialized engineering phase of major construction projects, performs design engineering work for projects of limited scope, and / or improves design of physical plant engineering systems. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Work will focus on electrical engineering as it applies to building and site infrastructure construction. Key requirements include being a technical lead in the electrical discipline as well as coordinating efforts between all other engineering and architectural disciplines.
Physical Planning, Development & Operations - Engineering Services (PPDO-ES) supports the UC Santa Cruz academic vision by managing and overseeing all engineering aspects of physical planning, design, and construction. PPDO-ES ensures that projects contribute to and support campus life by creating visually pleasing, functional, and sustainable facilities that are sensitive and responsive to the surrounding natural landscape. We collaborate with other campus departments to facilitate and realize their programmatic and operational needs when building or altering facilities.
PPDO-ES works closely with campus clients and stakeholders to support UCSC's Academic Mission and is responsible for the planning, design, and construction of all major and minor capital improvement projects. In addition to design and construction, PPDO-ES supports the Campus Planning unit which oversees conformance with UCSC's Long-Range Development Plans including project entitlements and regulatory compliance such as the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), Forest Practice Act, Coastal Act, and coordination with local, state, and federal agencies.

Job Duties
- 10%: Functions as project engineer (electrical), for major construction projects, including new construction or major alterations, planning efforts, pre-design studies, and other.
- 20%: Serves as engineering liaison to coordinate communications to various stakeholders
- 10%: Coordinates all or most segments of a construction project, from inception to completion. Provides engineering analysis in support of recommended system upgrades or modifications.
- 25%: Reviews engineering design development and construction documents to ensure compliance with the specified programs and policies of the organization.
- 10%: Provides analysis to improve the design, operation and maintenance features of electrical, mechanical and / or utility systems in a physical plant. Implements related business processes.
- 10%: Provides professional engineering information and advice to committees consisting of current or prospective occupants in determining building needs and priorities, for projects of limited scope.
- 5%: Functions as design engineer (electrical) for projects of limited scope undertaken by organization's staff, such as: small buildings and structures; minor alterations to large buildings; and utility, drainage and road systems.
- 5%: Functions as physical plant engineer, concentrating in some particular aspect of the physical planning and construction program or the physical plant operation and maintenance program, where the level of difficulty and volume of work requires professional engineering support.
- 5%: Provides direction and guidance to lower level engineers.
Required Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge associated with independently performing the full range of engineering professional work.
- Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.
- Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to manage competing priorities.
- Strong project management skills needed to ensure high quality and timely completion of design and construction projects.
- Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
- Ability to lead and influence others.
- Demonstrated experience with medium voltage (12 and 21 KV) power grids on a campus wide scale including; underground distribution, switching configurations, protection schemes, short circuit analysis, and interfacing with the outside public utility.
- Training and experience in building startup and commissioning in particular leading functional acceptance testing.
- Experience with the following; public agency construction administration, personal computer use and engineering applications, AutoCAD drafting system, SKM critical path scheduling especially computerized scheduling methods and experience with geographical information system (GIS) software.
- Willingness to expand knowledge into other overlapping disciplines including civil engineering, mechanical engineering, architecture, landscape architecture and planning.
