Essential Functions:
POSITION SUMMARY: The Center for Digital Education is a new department within Olin Business School that will assist in the design, creation, and development of Olin’s online programs, hybrid programs, and digital learning resources. The Instructional Designer will collaborate with faculty to design and develop highly engaging online and hybrid courses that adhere to best practices and ensure the highest quality of learning for Olin students. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Course Design and Development - In collaboration with Olin faculty, design and develop instructionally sound online and hybrid courses from start to finish. This includes defining course learning objectives, designing formative and summative assessments, incorporating engaging media and graphics, ensuring student-to-student interaction, implementing course design and inputting content in the learning management system, and creating/conducting course development evaluations.
- Digital Learning Consultation - As faculty wish to adapt new technology or digital practices into their courses, you will provide expert consultation on if this practice is the best solution for their course and their students, offer advice and assistance on implementing the practice, and follow-up to ensure that it is continuing to meet faculty and student needs.
- Evaluation - Using qualitative and quantitative data, evaluate the effectiveness of course designs and implementations as well as digital learning solutions. This includes the effectiveness of course assessments in meeting course learning outcomes, implementing informal and formal course evaluations, and providing feedback based on evaluation data.
- Project Management - Managing course projects and other priorities simultaneously, expertly keeping track of tasks, stakeholders and deadlines. It is imperative that course projects be managed effectively in order to provide prompt content delivery for students. Project updates should be communicated to the Associate Director with any concerns being made known.
- Accessibility and Universal Design for Learning - All course content must meet all online accessibility guidelines and adhere to Universal Design for Learning principles. UDL and accessibility should be incorporated into the course design from the start of development.
- Media Consultation and Development - In collaboration with the faculty member, the instructional designer will decide on the best media delivery method for course content, advise on how content is formulated for media production, and assist where needed in the media development process.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Development or Design, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience (3-5 years preferred).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with third party vendors and contractors in the course development process.
- Masters degree in Instructional Development or Design, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience (5-10 years).
- Extensive knowledge of learning theory, pedagogy, andragogy, Universal Design, and online learning best practices.
- Ability to guide faculty in the process of organizing and/or chunking course content for online delivery using cognitive load theory.
- Ability to design and develop learning content that meets the needs of target student populations.
- Familiarity with the Backwards Design model and the ADDIE model of instructional design.
- Proficiency in using an LMS, lecture-capture software, and other instructional technologies as well as the ability to learn new learning technologies quickly.
- Proficiency creating multimedia (images, audio and video) that adhere to accessibility standards, multimedia best practices and graphic design principles.
- Ability to graciously give constructive feedback and suggestions to faculty. Giving evidence for recommend changes based on best practices, research, and student needs.
- Excellent project management skills and ability to effectively set expectations with faculty and office colleagues.
- Excellent faculty rapport, customer service skills, and can-do attitude.
- Ability to work in a highly dynamic and collaborative team environment as a positive and engaged professional.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to stay current with emerging pedagogical practices and technology (ie: virtual reality, AI).
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with project management tools.
- Experience teaching online courses.
- Graphic design and media production skills.
Salary Range:
The hiring range for this position is $52,943 - $68,816 annually.
