Washington University School of Medicine supports the use of social media initiatives that seek to share and support its educational, research and clinical missions. The Social Media Coordinator will work with the leadership team in the Office of Medical Public Affairs to develop messages and content in concert with the School of Medicine’s communications objectives.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Write, edit and maintain content for social media outlets for the School of Medicine; engage in iterative content writing process, negotiating input and revisions from multiple subject matter experts; manage the flow of pre-approved photographs, tweets, video, events and information from our office to the WUSM/WUSTL community; engage in positive discussion about the School of Medicine. Work with other staff as members of a multidisciplinary team who each contribute to excellence in web-based communications at WUSM.
Monitor conversations about the School of Medicine on social media outlets/channels.
Devise and execute methods to engage the WUSM community in social media efforts; evaluate existing content and recommend options for sourcing new content; identify new outlets and audiences for content from WUSM and make recommendations to the leadership of Medical Public Affairs about the treatment and methodology for the use of social media.
Serve as an expert on and resource for writing for the web, particularly for social media outlets; work with staff in various departments to ensure content design is user-centric and consistent in style, format and quality; uphold and encourage content quality standards; lead in the development and implementation of best practices, style guides and writing/editing standards for social media communications.
Participate in the Social Media Policy Workgroup for the School of Medicine and attend the University’s Social Media monthly meetings.
Assist Medical Public Affairs leadership team with the training of staff and site setup for social media endeavors around the School of Medicine.
Maintain a log of all social media initiatives and content managers related to the School of Medicine.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director for Creative Services & Marketing Communications and the Web Communications Manager.
Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications or Marketing, with a mastery of writing for the web.
Extensive familiarity with social networks (Facebook, Twitter, blogs, YouTube) and emerging technologies (including mobile), Internet culture and etiquette.
At least two years of experience with the development, editing and optimization of content for digital communications, preferably within the health or higher education industries.
At least two years of direct experience in a health care setting.
Familiarity with HootSuite and monitoring systems for social media initiatives.
The ideal candidate will have at least one year of experience with content creation for, and monitoring of, multiple social media channels for an organization.
Excellent writing, verbal and organizational skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks of varying degrees of complexity and to work well as part of a team.
Experience with content tagging and search engine optimization and search engine marketing practices.
Expert level of attention to detail.
Possess a fascination with digital, interactive media.
Ability to work well with faculty, administration and staff in a matrix organization.
Ability to interpret academic subjects related to medicine and health care to lay audiences.
Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills.
A commitment to work within the university’s established organizational structure.
A commitment to independent higher education, in general, and to Washington University, in particular.
Applicant Special Instructions:
Ability to travel to and from client meetings at the School of Medicine; travel to on- and off-campus locations as needed, per client requirements.
The hiring range for this position is $44,054 - $56,139 annually.
