Full-time, 12 months, Exempt Sandy Spring Friends School seeks a dynamic, innovative leader for Assistant Head of School. As one of our most senior leadership positions, this role includes serving as a key advisor to the Head of School and comes with significant logistical oversight and implementation of the School's daily operations, strategic planning, project management, programmatic leadership, and professional development planning. The Assistant Head of School is responsible for cross-divisional and cross-curricular coordination of professional development, policies, procedures, and programs. The Assistant Head clerks the meeting of division heads and has direct oversight of the technology department, library services, the health center, and summer programs. The Assistant Head is also asked to lead special projects and committees as assigned by the Head of School. This is a senior administrative role reporting directly to the Head of School. Essential Job Functions: -
Coordinate efforts among the three division heads to sustain a unified, coherent, and dynamic PS-12th grade academic and co-curricular program geared towards fulfilling the mission of the School and meeting the diverse needs of students. -
Lead efforts, in conjunction with the three division heads and the Head of School, to develop and maintain effective systems for faculty evaluation and professional development. -
Collaborate with the Head of School and the Administrative Council to design, implement, and review school-wide policies. -
Collaborate with division heads and the Head of School on academic staffing needs and work with the Director of Human Resources on the coordination of the hiring process including participation in search processes for key roles, as assigned by Head of School. -
Supervise, evaluate, and support the Directors of Information Technology, Academic Technology, Health Center, and Summer Programs. -
Write, edit, and review school-wide communications related to School programming. -
Serve on School-wide committees related to academic, co-curricular, or student support programs, including the Division Heads Group and other standing or ad-hoc committees, as determined by the Head of School. -
Work closely with the Director of Operations facilities planning and/or capital improvement projects and committees as needed to support academic and other program functions. -
Attend Board of Trustees meetings and presenting as needed at the direction of the Head of School, including creating and maintaining the Board of Trustees data dashboard and serving on appropriate board committees. -
Collaborate with the Head of School and the Director of Institutional Equity, Justice, and Belonging on strategic initiatives and creating an equitable, inclusive, and just school culture that supports a sense of belonging in all Work closely with the Executive Assistant to the Head of School to maintain an administrative planning calendar and participate in school-wide calendar/event coordination. -
Lead school accreditation and self-study processes including participation with the school accreditation visiting teams for AIMS. -
Teach one section of an Upper or Middle School course. -
Lead special projects and committees as well as other duties as assigned by Head of School. -
In the absence of the Head of School, serve as the lead school administrator. Knowledge and Skill Set Requirements: -
Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred; demonstrated senior leadership experience; a passion for student-centered experiential and progressive education; a relational leader skilled in fostering partnerships; strengths in verbal and written communication; skilled in cross-cultural competency and advocating for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; an effective delegator who is highly organized with a strong ability to multitask; proven effectiveness in change management; a visionary leader who is able to embrace Quaker values and utilize Quaker process as it applies to administrative tasks; and a seasoned individual adept at understanding the independent school landscape. Ability to move about the entire campus for meetings, observations, supervision responsibilities, event attendance, including navigating steps and sloped walkways. -
Ability to use a computer for extended periods of time for administrative tasks including but not limited to: composing, sending, reading emails; accessing internet-based materials and resources; reading, editing, and writing letters, reports, documentation; participation in online conferences, webinars, teleconferences.
