JPF03951 Junior Specialist - Dugger Lab Position Summary: Responsibilities of this position will include planning, execution, and presentation of research on human brain focused on dementia. A successful candidate will participate in lab activities, particularly around tissue-related technologies (including but not limited to digital pathology, western blots, and immunohistochemistry). The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills in communication and writing; as well as the ability to work independently or in a team. Will be expected to complete and maintain proficiency in human subject (HIPPA compliance and regulation, etc.) and lab safety/biohazard training.
Responsibilities:
RESEARCH (70%): Participate and be creatively involved in lab activities, particularly around tissue-related technologies (including but not limited to digital pathology, histological, and biochemical techniques). Maintain high level of organizational skills (keeping an up to date laboratory notebook), proper laboratory etiquette and techniques, and be able to prioritize and make progress on multiple projects. The incumbent will be expected to produce contributions of a high academic caliber that has the potential to result in authorship on scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Journal of Alzheimer's disease, Acta Neuropathologica, etc.).
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE (20%): The incumbent will be focused on a specialized area providing technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in planning and execution of a research project as well as maintaining good laboratory practices. This will be done in collaboration with the PI (Dr. Dugger), and other faculty and staff in the adjacent Neuropathology lab. The incumbent will actively participate in weekly meetings (including a didactive microscope session lead by Dr. Dugger) and will be required to attend a monthly Clinical and Pathological conference at the Lawrence J. Ellison Ambulatory Care Center in Sacramento (or over zoom depending on circumstances). The candidate will also be required to attend other talks given by faculty, both on and off campus throughout the year, which will discuss current and ongoing research projects.
UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10%): The Junior Specialist will be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate research assistants that rotate through the lab as well as participating in providing information to the wider community. This includes participating in the 'brains to classrooms program' (presenting information about the brain to elementary students), undergraduate students coming from Edmondson Scholar's Program, the Advancing Diversity in Aging Research (ADAR), and other such programs. The incumbent will work under the supervision and report to Dr. Brittany Dugger in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
Basic Qualifications: Bachelor Degree with a major in neurobiology, biological sciences or a related field Previous exceptional experience working in a research laboratory
Preferred Qualifications: Previous work with digital pathology and histological techniques Proficient computer skills including spreadsheet and database software Experience in project coordination Demonstrated ability to work independently Demonstrates ability to take initiative, make critical decisions, and communicate ideas effectively. Proficient in electronic data retrieval and database use for medical records and research studies.
Salary: Step I - $44,500 Annually, 100% FTE

Term of Appointment: One year with possibility to extend. Non-Exempt appointment based on the needs of the research project. 100% Appointment.
