Position Summary The Opportunity: The Office of University Life was created in 2015 to develop and enhance the student experience at Columbia University. Working in collaboration with students, faculty and staff throughout the schools, we focus on strengthening resources, policies and conversations, and building community outside of the classroom. The Office has significant reach: its primary audience of 30,000 includes Columbia students (graduate and undergraduate across all schools and colleges), with secondary audiences that include faculty, staff, researchers and University leadership. Position Overview: The Office is seeking a qualified and social media savvy individual to help drive the Office's communications and marketing strategy. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Social and Multimedia Specialist will set and drive a multi-year, refreshed social media strategy for the Office. This role is pivotal to supporting both promotion and awareness of University Life's programming, events and initiatives. The Social and Multimedia Specialist will also amplify events, opportunities and programming offered across the University. The Specialist will plan and share engaging, visually appealing social content aimed to engage Columbia's students. These channels collectively serve as critical communications platforms for students to access resources and find relevant information about student opportunities and core values such as diversity, equity and inclusion, sexual respect, mental health and well-being. Additionally, the Specialist will take on social media campaigns around timely initiatives and key strategic priorities within the Office of University Life. The Social and Multimedia Specialist also has the opportunity to reimagine the ways in which the Columbia community engages on social media platforms with the Office of University Life.
Responsibilities The Social and Multimedia Specialist will work within a 3-4 person communications and marketing team, and collaborate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to: - Develop and drive a refreshed, multi-year social media strategy for the Office of University Life, in close partnership with other Communications teammates, Office leadership and key Columbia stakeholders, particularly colleagues in Public Affairs, and digital and social media teams across the University
- Source and publish engaging daily social media content across multiple channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), aligned to the Office's editorial and messaging calendar
- Contribute to and drive an influencer/student voice strategy to facilitate connections and increase engagement with the Office of University Life and with University values
- Monitor, listen and respond to conversations on social media to increase engagement with the Office's channels
- Identify meaningful Key Performance Indicators to measure the Office's annual social media progress, in collaboration with the Director of Communications
- Gather and analyze weekly social media metrics to provide insights and recommendations to the Director of Communications and the larger leadership team of the Office
- Take on pop-up video shooting projects, as needed, for campus events and happenings
- Edit videos to share engaging content across platforms
- Plan and execute some light graphic design skills
- Maintain an image and content archive for the Office's social media content
- Use sound judgment to drive communications initiatives and campaigns
- All other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications - Bachelors or equivalent experience required
- 4-6 years of experience
- Passion for the Office of University Life's mission and values around inclusion and student well-being
- Demonstrated experience planning and executing a comprehensive social media strategy across multiple platforms (eg. Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
- Strong computer skills, including mastery of Google products
- Demonstrated interest in a career in communications or marketing
- An understanding of how to leverage social media to meet communications objectives
- Strong organizational skills
