The newly formed Research for Indigenous Social Action and Equity (RISE) Center seeks applications for an administrative assistant. The aims of the Center are bold—to re-imagine and re-create how mainstream U.S. culture engages with narratives about Indigenous Peoples. We are working toward a society in which all individuals not only learn about Indigenous Peoples but also learn from Indigenous Peoples. Our mission is three-fold: 1) To conduct rigorous multidisciplinary research centering Indigenous Peoples’ voices and experiences; 2) To build, support, and sustain a multi-university pipeline of Indigenous scholar-activists; 3) To put research into action by working with artists and activists who use the Center’s research to propagate accurate, expansive, and empowering narratives of Indigenous Peoples.
We seek an administrative assistant who is ready to jump in and support a growing team of scholar-activists. The assistant will work directly with the Director, Executive Director, and senior Center personnel. The applicant should be passionate about racial justice and eager to work flexibly across disciplines and sectors to create societal change. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, especially those from Indigenous backgrounds and/or those with a strong record of community engagement involving Indigenous Peoples.
Effort.80% administrative; 20% operations
Duties. The administrative assistant will provide administrative support to the Center, including:
Event Coordination and Communications (70%)
Maintaining the Center’s website;
Receiving and responding to inquiries about the Center’s work;
Scheduling and planning in-person and virtual meetings of Center personnel, collaborators, stakeholders, and Indigenous communities;
Making travel arrangements and coordinating reimbursement;
Drafting, proofreading, producing, and distributing event materials and Center communications;
Serving as a liaison between the Center and external vendors; and
Developing and analyzing attendee feedback surveys for Center meetings and events.
Support for the Director and Executive Director (10%)
Coordinating Principal Investigator and Executive Director’s calendars;
Assisting in preparation of talks, correspondence, memoranda, charts, tables, and other documents as necessary; and
Other administrative duties as assigned.
Coordinating use of the Center’s physical and digital resources;
Overseeing supplies ordering and packing/shipping for the Center;
Organizing electronic and paper documents;
Preparing expense reports;
Coordinating with the Center’s executive assistant;
Supervising hourly staff working on narrative change research and social action;
Assisting with day-to-day operations;
Coordinating efforts of the research, social action, and communications teams; and
Other operational duties as assigned.
High school degree or higher
Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in administration, OR equivalent education/experience. Strong organizational, analytic, and communication skills, including:
Relentless attention to detail;
Strong written and oral communication skills;
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to exercise poise, tact, and diplomacy in working with diverse groups and individuals;
Mastery of Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Dropbox, Zoom, and mass communication platforms (e.g., Mailchimp);
Ability to manage multiple projects and interruptions with ease and good humor;
Ability to respond to the demands of a fast-paced work environment, analyze problems, and develop results-oriented solutions;
Record of self-directed work and initiative taking;
Ability to receive and integrate feedback;
Positive, team-oriented, mission-driven attitude; and
Experience working with people from diverse communities, professional sectors, and disciplinary backgrounds.
