The Academic Counselor performs academic counseling and works with students to develop academic plans of study, work with students to select courses and advises them on their transitions, adding courses, withdrawing courses and assist them with the program requirements; performs administrative tasks associated with department activities such as collecting and organizing data and maintaining an updated student files; student documentation, reports, forms, and general correspondence; receives and refers to the college catalogs, schedules, student records, student handbooks, policies, procedures, and reference material. This is part time temporary position to cover the academic counseling area in the absence of one of the staff and it ends on February 12, 2021. Supervision Received: Reports to the Assistant Dean of Enrollment, or Designee Supervision Exercised: N/A Example of Duties of the position of the Academic Counselor: - Provides information regarding course degree requirements and transfer requirements;
- Assists students in registering, adding, or withdrawing from courses;
- Assists students in obtaining academic support assistance;
- Refers students to other services as appropriate;
- Communicates with other departments, faculty members, students, school officials, and other individuals to coordinate activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; responds to complaints, and initiate a resolution;
- Performs other related duties as directed
Job Requirements:
- College degree or equivalent combination of education training and experience. Three (3) years experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advisement, career development or program/project management; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Demonstrated experience with college advising systems and providing direct counseling/advising services to students.
- Ability to work harmoniously with various constituencies including faculty, staff & administration.
- Must demonstrate excellent communications skills in a multi-cultural environment
- Excellent organizational and verbal and written communication skills
- Must demonstrate excellent abilities in the use of technological tools, such as Microsoft office, PowerPoint & Excel.
- Availability to work some evenings and weekend required.
