Canterbury seeks a passionate, collaborative, and full-time library media specialist for the 2020-21 school year. The basic duties of the library media specialist involve management of all aspects of library service and require a detail-oriented approach to reference, bibliographic instruction, collection development, technical service, circulation, media equipment, et al. As libraries move increasingly from paper to digital collections, expertise in current information technology and a forward-looking perspective are crucial. Canterbury will open a new, state-of-the-art library and administrative building this spring, and the library media specialist may have the opportunity to design their space and the challenge to supervise the library’s move into the new building. The successful candidate is an educator who: - loves reading and is able to share that passion effectively with students and faculty.
- loves both lower school and middle school-aged students and is able to supervise and manage them effectively.
- collaborates easily and effectively with other teachers to plan and implement lessons.
- reads enthusiastically and widely across genres and disciplines and can transmit enthusiasm to children and preadolescents.
- possesses a wide knowledge and commitment to both classic and modern, multicultural literature and can situate them in interdisciplinary contexts.
- provides group instruction and individual guidance to students to help them locate resources and use effective research techniques.
- consults with teachers on appropriate use of materials and helps them schedule materials for classroom instruction.
- initiates sessions to assist students and teachers in the use of technology in the library/media center
- manages acquisitions, processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of resources.
- manages school subscriptions.
- fosters a climate of respect for each child as an individual.
- makes interesting and effective presentations to staff and parents on library-related topics.
- has comfort recruiting support from and working with parent volunteers as necessary.
- maintains strong relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
- maintains a safe, healthy, and inviting learning space.
- cheerfully supervises lunch, recess, carpool, and other duties as required and participates in all required school events and the life of the school.
- is experienced in and committed to the ongoing development and maintenance of an inclusive community.
- is able to handle frequent lifting of books, boxes, etc.
