General Summary/Purpose: With minimal management oversight, independently provides technical support for hardware and software elements and processes of the network security infrastructure. Principally responsible for direct support for 3-5 Network Security subsystems and general support of other security tools. Participates in the risk mitigation evaluation process and implements changes to mitigate risks. Specific Duties & Responsibilities: Duties and responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned): - Evaluates new monitoring and security systems and processes and provides cost benefit analysis and recommendations for acquisition and integration into the JHSPH network. ($100K to $500K)
- Monitors new developments of security products and services and ensures currency of our technical infrastructure.
- Provides proactive and reactive monitoring, troubleshooting, and documentation of activities for large scale LAN/WAN infrastructure, including patterns of security activities, network performance, server health, service availability, application processes, and environmental systems (HVAC, UPS, etc.) and provides recommendations and/or changes to mitigate risks and works with other IT staff to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
- Acts a focal point for security events (virus outbreaks, security breaches and provides leadership to contain and eliminate exposures).
- Participates in strategic and tactical planning process with customers for new systems deployment to address security issues.
- Works closely with vendors to identify issues and fixes with security hardware and software products.
- Develops or participates in the security standards definition or enhancement process.
- Provides feedback for specific risks and mitigation efforts.
- Supports the security incident handling process, including technical forensic and incident documentation process. Provides reports to management on incident related activities.
- The senior levels of the position may develop customized solutions to issues that current vendor offerings do not address.
- Proactively manages risk assessments and communicates with the customers with issues identified and alternatives for mitigation.
- Conducts and/or participates in fault management, configuration management, accounting management, performance management, and security management vulnerability scanning process. Provides recommendations and follow-up for risk mitigation.
- Provides network performance statistics, trend analysis, calls attention to potential capacity, performance, and security problems, and makes recommendations for the appropriate corrective action.
- Develops monitoring and reporting solutions to meet established customer Service Level Agreements.
- Enhances disaster recovery and business continuity planning documents for IT assets.
- Coordinates and oversees disaster recovery tests at external testing facilities.
- Will be required to participate in on-call responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory): - Bachelor's degree required.
- 4 years in the area of Network and Information Security.
Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Preferred Qualifications: - Current security certifications preferred.

- Understanding of Network Performance Management techniques and software.
- Previous experience working in a Network Operations Center.
- Experience with Network Management platforms such as CiscoWorks, Concorde, HP Openview, Spectum, etc.
- Familiarity with network technologies such as DHCP, DNS and PPP.
- Experience with firewalls and other security technologies.
- Experience with network analyzing equipment.
- Understanding of cabling and wiring standards.
- Understanding of wireless technologies.
- Understanding of authentication services and directory services such as Active Directory, RADIUS, & LDAP.
- Understanding of Storage Area Networks and Clustering technology.
- Understanding of voice and video technologies.
